Former Sierra Leone President Koroma Returns Home Under Nigerian Escort

Former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma has returned to his home country from Nigeria after more than two years away, in a move that marks a significant development in one of West Africa’s most closely watched political and legal cases.

Koroma arrived in Freetown over the weekend accompanied by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo. The return was carried out on the instruction of President Bola Tinubu, whose administration has played a central role in the ECOWAS-led confidence-building process between Sierra Leone’s political leaders.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu described the homecoming as the successful conclusion of a regional diplomatic initiative that began after Koroma’s relocation to Nigeria in January 2024. She said the process, driven by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), was designed to promote peace, stability and political understanding in Sierra Leone following the country’s post-election tensions.

According to the minister, sustained engagement involving ECOWAS, the Nigerian government and other stakeholders helped create conditions for greater understanding between President Julius Maada Bio and Koroma, paving the way for the former president’s temporary stay in Nigeria and his eventual return.

“His conduct throughout this period reflected restraint, statesmanship, and commitment to a peaceful outcome,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu said.

Koroma, who governed Sierra Leone from 2007 to 2018, left the country after being charged in connection with the failed military uprising of November 2023. Prosecutors accused him of offences including treason and misprision of treason, allegations he has consistently denied. His legal team has maintained that the case is politically motivated.

Nigerian officials stressed that the return does not interfere with Sierra Leone’s judicial process. Rather, they said it reflects the completion of a humanitarian and diplomatic arrangement that sought to reduce political tensions while allowing legal proceedings to continue within Sierra Leone’s constitutional framework.

Odumegwu-Ojukwu also thanked President Bio, Koroma and the people of Sierra Leone for their cooperation throughout the process, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to regional harmony, democratic stability and constitutional order. She expressed confidence that Koroma’s return would contribute to national reconciliation and strengthen the country’s peace-building efforts.

For West Africa, Koroma’s homecoming represents more than the return of a former head of state. It highlights ECOWAS’s continuing role in resolving political crises through dialogue and diplomacy, while reinforcing Nigeria’s position as a key regional mediator committed to balancing justice, democratic governance and lasting peace.
