Two foreign nationals died on Friday evening following a suspected hotel pool electrocution in southern India. Two other people suffered injuries while attempting to pull the victims from the water at the luxury property.
The tragic incident occurred at the five-star Conrad Bengaluru hotel in the city neighborhood of Halasuru. Police and forensic investigators immediately sealed off the third-floor swimming area to examine the electrical installations.
Victims and Rescuers Identified
Authorities identified the deceased guests as German national Alexander Maximilian Theiss and Slovak citizen Juraj Horvat. Theiss worked as a flight crew member for German carrier Lufthansa. Horvat served as an international project manager for technology company IBM.
Both men were staying at the hotel during business travel to the metropolitan hub. Emergency personnel transported both individuals to Manipal Hospital, where medical staff pronounced them dead on arrival.
Two other men suffered electric shocks while rushing to assist the unconscious swimmers. The injured rescuers include American guest Mathew Desantis and local pool attendant Rahul Tiwari. Medical staff treated both men for shock and confirmed they remain in stable condition.
Police Launch Criminal Negligence Probe
Bengaluru police registered a formal case following an official complaint filed by the wife of one victim. Senior officers are examining whether hotel management failed to maintain safe electrical infrastructure around the recreation deck.
Investigators suspect that faulty underwater lighting or defective water pump wiring leaked live current into the water. Specialist electrical inspectors joined police teams to examine all submerged equipment and filtration circuits across the pool.
Officials from Conrad Bengaluru confirmed full cooperation with city authorities and emergency response agencies. The hotel administration expressed deep sorrow over the deaths while internal safety audits continue on site.
Scrutiny Mounts Over Hospitality Safety
The tragic incident has sparked widespread concern regarding safety standards at luxury hospitality venues across the region. Industry experts emphasized the critical need for ground fault protection and regular electrical testing near commercial swimming pools.
City administrators announced comprehensive inspections of all recreational aquatic facilities in major metropolitan hotels. Consular representatives from Germany and Slovakia are working with local authorities to arrange repatriation for the deceased.
The investigation into the suspected hotel pool electrocution continues as authorities await final autopsy and electrical engineering findings.
