15 Dead, 42 Injured After Truck Hits Worshippers in Madhya Pradesh
At least 15 people have died and 42 were injured after a truck hit Hindu devotees in Gwalior, India, prompting an inquiry and police suspensions.
At least 15 people have been killed and 42 others injured after a truck loaded with paddy ploughed into devotees making their way to a Hindu temple in Gwalior, in India’s Madhya Pradesh state, prompting authorities to investigate how the vehicle entered a restricted stretch of road during festival celebrations.
The crash occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, October 18, near the Sheetla Mata Temple on Chinor Road, where large numbers of worshippers had gathered for Navratri festivities. The truck reportedly broke through police barricades, lost control while descending a steep stretch and struck devotees and roadside stalls before crashing into the temple’s entrance gate, damaging part of the structure.
The number of casualties rose as emergency workers and local residents helped remove victims from the scene and transport the injured to nearby hospitals. Early reports put the death toll at 13, but India’s public broadcaster, Akashvani News, reported on Monday that 15 people had died and 42 were injured.
Authorities are investigating both the cause of the crash and how the truck gained access to a route where heavy vehicles were restricted. District officials said a police checkpoint and barricade were in place, while a regional transport department team was assigned to inspect the truck for possible mechanical problems. Initial reports suggested a vehicle malfunction may have caused the driver to lose control, but the precise cause has not been conclusively established.
The incident has triggered disciplinary action within the local police force. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav ordered the removal of a city superintendent of police from his post and the suspension of eight other police personnel over alleged negligence. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered, with the district administration instructed to submit its findings within seven days.
The truck’s driver and owner were arrested, according to Indian media reports. Investigators are expected to examine how the vehicle passed the security barriers and whether road restrictions and traffic-control arrangements were properly enforced during the festival. The circumstances surrounding the vehicle’s entry into the area remain under investigation.
The state government announced compensation of 400,000 rupees for each family of a person killed, 200,000 rupees for each seriously injured person and 50,000 rupees for other injured victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced federal relief of 200,000 rupees for the next of kin of each deceased person and 50,000 rupees for those injured.
The tragedy has renewed attention to the risks surrounding major religious gatherings in India, where festival crowds, temporary stalls and restricted roads can create dangerous conditions when vehicle access is not adequately controlled. The immediate inquiry in Gwalior will focus on the truck’s loss of control and the security arrangements that failed to keep it away from worshippers, while the suspensions signal that authorities are also examining whether the incident could have been prevented.
