Tanzania Mourns Death of First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan

Tanzania’s First Gentleman, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, has died at the age of 77, leaving the East African nation in mourning and bringing an emotional loss to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, whose rise to office in 2021 made him the country’s first presidential spouse.

The announcement was made by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Hassan died on Monday morning while undergoing treatment for a heart condition at a hospital in Zanzibar. Burial arrangements are being made in Zanzibar, the family’s native home and the semi-autonomous archipelago where both he and President Samia have deep roots.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan became Tanzania’s First Gentleman in March 2021 after the death of President John Magufuli, when then-Vice President Samia Suluhu Hassan was constitutionally sworn in as the country’s first female president. Although he largely stayed away from frontline politics, he was widely regarded as a quiet and supportive figure throughout his wife’s presidency.

The couple had been married for decades and raised four children—three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who serves as a member of Zanzibar’s House of Representatives. Their family has long been viewed as one of Tanzania’s most prominent political households, with strong ties to Zanzibar’s public life.

Tributes began pouring in from across East Africa shortly after news of his death was confirmed. Kenyan President William Ruto described Hassan as “a distinguished son of Tanzania,” saying President Samia had lost a lifelong companion while the nation had lost a respected public figure. Burundi’s President Évariste Ndayishimiye also conveyed condolences to the president, her family and the Tanzanian people.

The death comes during a significant period for Tanzania, as President Samia continues her second term following the country’s 2025 general election.
