Kidnapped Kebbi High Court Judge Regains Freedom After Week-Long Ordeal

Relief has spread across Nigeria's legal community after Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court regained his freedom, bringing an end to a week-long abduction that had raised fresh concerns about the security of judicial officers and public officials in the country.

The judge's release was confirmed on Monday by the Kebbi State Police Command, members of his family and the Kebbi State Ministry of Justice, all of whom said he had safely returned home after spending seven days in captivity.

Justice Bunza was abducted in the early hours of July 26 from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area shortly after returning from a trip to neighbouring Sokoto State. The incident prompted widespread condemnation from the judiciary, legal practitioners and civil society organisations, who called for intensified efforts to secure his release and strengthen the protection of judicial officers.

Confirming the development, police spokesperson Bashir Usman said security agencies would continue investigating the case to identify and arrest those responsible for the kidnapping. He disclosed that the abductors had demanded a ransom during the judge's captivity but reiterated the command's position against ransom payments. The police, however, did not provide details of the circumstances surrounding the judge's release.

Family members welcomed the judge's return with gratitude, describing the past week as a period of anxiety and uncertainty. While thanking the judiciary, security agencies, the Kebbi State Government and members of the public for their prayers and support, the family declined to explain how Justice Bunza regained his freedom, saying more information would be made available at a later time.

The abduction and subsequent release have once again drawn attention to Nigeria's persistent kidnapping crisis, particularly in parts of the North-West where armed criminal groups continue to target travellers, community leaders, business owners and public officials. Although security operations have intensified in recent months, kidnappings for ransom remain one of the country's most pressing security challenges.
