Glo Marks 23 Years with Bold Push for Better Customer Experience

Twenty-three years after transforming Nigeria’s telecommunications landscape with per-second billing, Globacom says it is entering a new era focused on delivering superior customer experience, deeper digital connectivity and greater value for millions of subscribers.

Founded on August 29, 2003, by Nigerian entrepreneur Dr. Mike Adenuga Jr., Glo emerged as the country’s first indigenous GSM operator at a time when mobile communication was largely considered a luxury. Its introduction of per-second billing reshaped the industry, forcing competitors to abandon expensive per-minute charging and making mobile communication more affordable for ordinary Nigerians.

As the company celebrates its 23rd anniversary, it is shifting attention from voice services to the digital economy. Rising demand for streaming, remote work, online learning and digital payments has transformed the competitive landscape, with data quality and customer experience becoming the new battleground among telecom operators.

Globacom says its anniversary campaign, themed “Never Settle for Less,” reflects more than a celebration of longevity. The company describes it as a renewed commitment to innovation, encouraging Nigerians to expect higher standards in connectivity, technology and everyday digital services.

The strategy is backed by significant investments in network infrastructure. Over the past year, Glo has expanded its telecommunications footprint through the deployment of thousands of new base stations, additional spectrum in the 1800MHz and 2600MHz bands, and carrier aggregation technology designed to improve mobile data capacity and network performance across urban and rural communities.

Alongside network upgrades, the company has introduced new customer-focused products, including enhanced Magic Data Bundles, an upgraded Talkmasta tariff plan and a revamped Glo Café self-service application featuring Gloria, an artificial intelligence-powered virtual assistant capable of responding to customer enquiries in multiple languages.

Industry observers note that the telecom sector has evolved dramatically since Glo entered the market. Nigeria’s mobile industry has grown from basic voice communication into a critical pillar of the country’s digital economy, with operators increasingly competing on broadband quality, digital services and personalized customer engagement rather than traditional call tariffs alone.

For Globacom, the anniversary is also a reflection on its broader legacy. Beyond telecommunications, the company has invested in submarine fibre infrastructure through Glo-1, supported entertainment and sports across Africa, and positioned itself as one of Nigeria’s most recognizable indigenous brands.

At 23, Glo’s story is no longer simply about surviving in a competitive industry, it is about redefining what superior service means in an increasingly digital world. As customer expectations continue to rise, the company’s next measure of success will depend not only on expanding its network, but on delivering faster, smarter and more meaningful connections for the people and businesses it serves.
