Veteran Nollywood Actor Francis Duru Dies at 57

Veteran Nigerian actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57 following a brief illness, his family announced on Friday, October 23, bringing an end to a career spanning more than three decades in Nollywood.

The family confirmed his death in a statement published on the actor’s official Instagram page, expressing gratitude to fans and well-wishers for their support and asking for understanding as they mourn. The statement did not disclose the nature of the illness or provide further details about the circumstances of his death.

“We, the family of Francis Duru, regret to announce his passing following a brief illness,” the family said, adding that they appreciated the prayers, love and understanding extended to them.

Abubakar Yakubu, president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), also confirmed the death in a social media tribute, describing Duru as a great thespian and expressing sorrow over the loss. The confirmation from the actor’s family and the guild prompted renewed attention to Duru’s contribution to the Nigerian film industry.

Duru became widely recognised for playing Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the 1995 film produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. The film became one of the notable titles of early Nollywood and helped establish his place among the actors who shaped the industry’s growth during the 1990s. He went on to appear in numerous productions, including Blood Money (1997), Stigma (2013) and Mboputa (2020).

Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru completed his early education there before moving to Nigeria for university. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996, and began his acting career in 1989, according to published biographical accounts.

His work received formal recognition in 2020 when he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role in an Igbo-language film award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He also served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010, reflecting his involvement in the professional body representing actors in the country.

Duru’s death comes months after he publicly rejected online claims that he was suffering from a life-threatening illness. In June, a video circulating on social media prompted speculation about his health, but the actor responded in an Instagram video, describing the footage and claims about his condition as false. His family’s announcement on Friday confirmed his death but offered no further medical details.

His passing marks the loss of a familiar screen presence whose career spanned several stages of Nollywood’s development, from the industry’s early home-video era to its more established contemporary film production. Through memorable roles and work beyond acting, Duru became part of the generation whose performances helped bring Nigerian films to audiences at home and across the African diaspora.
