Australian Model Sahara Ray Dies at 34 Months After Welcoming First Child

Australian model and swimwear designer Sahara Ray has died at the age of 34, just months after becoming a mother, prompting an outpouring of grief from her family, friends and followers who remember her for her modelling career, fashion business and vibrant personality.

Ray died on Sunday, October 18, 2026, in a hospital, her family confirmed in a statement to entertainment outlet TMZ on Monday. The family said she was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her death and described her as deeply loved. Her official cause of death has not been publicly established.

Her younger sister, Ruby Ray, paid an emotional tribute on social media on Tuesday, describing Sahara as a larger-than-life presence in her family and expressing anguish over the loss. She wrote about wanting more time with her older sister, recalling the laughter and conversations they shared. The tribute followed messages from friends and other members of the fashion and entertainment communities mourning her death.

Ray's mother, Gretchen Bach, also remembered her daughter as a passionate and kind person whose interests included her family, fashion, surfing and her baby daughter, Snow. The family has received condolences from people who followed Ray's career and personal life through social media.

Born in Australia, Ray was the daughter of professional surfer Tony Ray and spent much of her childhood between Australia, California and Hawaii. Growing up around the surfing world helped shape her interests, while her later work in modelling and fashion introduced her to a wider international audience.

She established herself as a model and social media personality before launching her swimwear label, Sahara Ray Swim, in 2014. Through the business and her online presence, she developed a following drawn to her fashion work, beachwear designs and lifestyle content.

Ray also attracted international media attention in 2016 after she was photographed spending time with Canadian singer Justin Bieber in Hawaii. The photographs fuelled reports of a romantic relationship, although the pair did not publicly confirm the nature of their relationship. She was also previously linked in media reports to Australian singer Cody Simpson.

In recent years, Ray spoke publicly about a serious health setback. In 2024, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, a rare neurological disorder in which the immune system attacks the peripheral nerves. She said the condition developed after she was struck by a car in an incident she attributed to a drunk driver.

The illness left her unable to walk independently for a period, and she described relying on a wheelchair and walker while undergoing rehabilitation. In updates shared with followers, she spoke about the physical and emotional difficulties of recovery and her hope of regaining mobility. There has been no public confirmation that the condition was related to her death.

Ray had entered a new chapter of her life earlier this year with the birth of her daughter, Snow, in January. She shared aspects of her experience as a new mother with followers, and her final Instagram grid post, published in July, featured photographs of the child. She captioned the images, “My whole heart 🤍 baby Snow.”

The post has since drawn renewed attention from fans following news of her death. Ray had not publicly identified her daughter's father, and the family has not announced further details about arrangements for the child.

Some entertainment reports have cited an alleged fentanyl overdose as a possible explanation for Ray's death. However, no official cause has been publicly confirmed, and the reports should not be treated as an established finding. Neither the family's announcement nor the available public statements have established the circumstances leading to her hospitalisation.

Ray's death has brought renewed attention to a career that spanned modelling, entrepreneurship and social media, as well as the personal struggles she shared with her audience. For those who knew her privately and those who followed her publicly, the loss comes at a time when she had recently embraced motherhood, leaving her family to mourn while caring for the daughter she had described as the centre of her world.
