Trump Endorses Netanyahu Nine Days Before Israeli Elections

US President Donald Trump has publicly endorsed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for re-election, offering the longtime leader a significant show of support just nine days before Israelis head to the polls in a closely contested parliamentary election.

Trump announced his endorsement on Sunday, October 18, in a post on his Truth Social platform, praising Netanyahu’s leadership and his partnership with Washington in confronting Iran. He described the Israeli prime minister as a strong leader who had endured considerable political opposition and declared his “Complete and Total Endorsement” of Netanyahu’s bid for another term.

The US president also linked his support to the two countries’ approach to Iran, warning that if Israelis elected a different leader, the United States could be left to handle the confrontation without the same level of cooperation from Israel. The remarks placed foreign policy and the US-Israeli security partnership at the centre of an endorsement delivered in the final stretch of the campaign.

Netanyahu responded by thanking Trump for his support and highlighting their joint efforts. The endorsement followed months in which Trump had refrained from publicly backing Netanyahu’s re-election campaign, amid differences between the two leaders over the direction of Middle East policy and their handling of the conflict involving Iran.

Israel’s parliamentary election is scheduled for October 27, the first national vote since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the subsequent wars and military operations involving Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. The election will determine the composition of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, and whether Netanyahu can assemble the support needed to remain prime minister.

Opinion polls have indicated that Netanyahu’s coalition of nationalist and religious parties could fall short of the 61 seats required to command a parliamentary majority. However, his opponents have also struggled to demonstrate a clear route to forming a stable government, leaving the election outcome uncertain.

Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, is campaigning under intense scrutiny over security failures surrounding the October 2023 Hamas attack, the conduct and consequences of Israel’s subsequent military campaigns, and the country’s international standing. His government has faced criticism at home over security and the outcome of the conflict with Iran, while its policies towards Palestinians have drawn sustained condemnation internationally.

Trump’s endorsement could carry political weight because of his popularity among sections of the Israeli public and the central role of the US alliance in Israel’s security and diplomacy. However, its actual effect on voting intentions remains unclear, and the statement does not resolve the domestic issues that will shape voters’ decisions.

The endorsement also comes against a backdrop of disagreements over regional strategy. Although Trump and Netanyahu have worked closely on confronting Iran, their approaches have not always aligned, including over efforts to secure an agreement concerning Gaza. Those differences had fuelled questions about the strength of their political partnership before Trump’s latest intervention.

The election carries implications beyond Israel’s domestic politics because its outcome will influence the leadership responsible for managing relations with Washington, security policy towards Iran and neighbouring countries, and negotiations over the future of Gaza. Trump’s intervention makes the US relationship an explicit part of the final campaign debate, but Israeli voters will ultimately determine the composition of parliament and the coalition capable of governing.
