SpaceX Unveils $100bn Plan for Giant Louisiana Spaceport
SpaceX plans to invest $100 billion in a vast Louisiana spaceport designed to support thousands of rocket launches each year.
SpaceX is preparing to build one of the most ambitious pieces of commercial space infrastructure ever proposed, announcing a $100 billion investment in a new Starbase Louisiana spaceport on the US Gulf Coast as the company pushes to dramatically increase the frequency of Starship launches.
The facility will occupy about 125,000 acres in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, roughly 200 miles west of New Orleans. SpaceX and Louisiana officials say it will become the company's largest launch complex and, at full scale, will be capable of supporting thousands of launches annually.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with SpaceX targeting the first Starship launch from the site in 2029. Louisiana Economic Development gives a slightly more conservative timetable, saying initial operations are expected around 2030.
Unlike a conventional launch site, SpaceX envisions the Louisiana facility as a largely self-sustaining spaceport. The planned infrastructure includes launch complexes, vehicle-processing facilities, methane propellant production, power generation and deep-water shipping capabilities for moving Starships and other equipment. An airport is also being considered.
The scale reflects the company's increasingly ambitious plans for Starship, the giant reusable rocket SpaceX is developing to replace much of its existing Falcon launch operation. The company wants Starship to eventually fly thousands of times a year, supporting the expansion of its Starlink satellite network as well as proposed space-based artificial intelligence infrastructure and future lunar and Mars missions.
But the size of the investment also highlights how much still has to go right technically. Starship has completed a series of test flights, but SpaceX has yet to demonstrate the rapid, routine reuse of both stages that would be required for the company's proposed launch cadence. The Louisiana project is therefore being built around capabilities that SpaceX is still working to prove in practice.
The Louisiana site nevertheless offers several strategic advantages. Its enormous land area gives SpaceX considerably more room than its existing Texas facility, while its location along the Gulf provides access to shipping routes and launch trajectories that could be useful for future satellite missions. The site is also close to natural gas resources that could support Starship's methane-based propulsion system.
For Louisiana, the project represents a major bet on an economy increasingly looking beyond its traditional dependence on oil and gas. State officials expect 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with an average annual salary of about $92,600, while Louisiana Economic Development estimates the wider project could generate more than 8,100 additional indirect jobs.
Governor Jeff Landry has presented the investment as a major economic and technological opportunity for the state. SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell has likewise portrayed the project as a step toward a much higher-volume commercial space industry.
The enthusiasm is not universal. The proposed site sits in a sensitive coastal environment known for wetlands and wildlife, and environmental groups have raised concerns about the potential impact of construction and rocket launches. The Louisiana Bucket Brigade, for example, has warned that the development could significantly alter the state's fragile coastline.
SpaceX says environmental protection will be incorporated into the project. The company has said it is working with Louisiana and federal agencies on wildlife and habitat issues and plans to support coastal restoration and shoreline-protection efforts. It also says much of the 125,000-acre property would remain natural wetlands rather than being covered by infrastructure.
The announcement comes at a moment when Washington is also seeking to expand America's commercial launch capacity. President Donald Trump signed a memorandum last week directing federal agencies to support a major increase in US commercial launches and to identify additional launch and re-entry sites, with a target of at least 1,000 launches and re-entries annually by 2030.
That wider policy shift gives SpaceX's Louisiana expansion an important strategic backdrop. The company is not simply adding another rocket pad; it is building infrastructure around a vision in which reusable rockets operate at an industrial scale, satellites become part of an increasingly integrated communications and computing network, and private companies take on a larger role in America's space ambitions.
If SpaceX can deliver on the engineering challenge behind Starship, Starbase Louisiana could become a major piece of the next phase of commercial spaceflight. But the $100 billion price tag, the environmental sensitivities of the location and the ambitious launch targets mean the project will be judged not just by how much infrastructure is built, but by whether SpaceX can safely turn an extraordinary vision into a reliable, repeatable launch system. The broader significance is that the race for space is increasingly becoming a race to build the industrial infrastructure on Earth capable of supporting it.
