RAF Base Terror Suspects Identified as British Nationals From London

The five men arrested following the major security operation near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire have been identified by police as British nationals from London, as Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) intensifies its investigation into an alleged plot involving suspicious vehicles approaching the strategic military air base.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects remain in custody after being arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act and offences under the Explosives Act. The investigation began in the early hours of Sunday after three suspicious vehicles were reported travelling towards RAF Fairford, prompting police to declare a major incident and launch one of the region’s largest recent counter-terrorism responses.

The men were initially detained by Gloucestershire Police before specialist counter-terrorism officers assumed responsibility for the inquiry. Detectives are continuing forensic examinations of the vehicles and other recovered evidence, while stressing that the investigation remains at an early stage.

The incident triggered the evacuation of around 85 households in the nearby village of Whelford, with residents ordered to leave their homes as police established a 400-metre security cordon around the affected area. The British Army’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal team and hazardous area response specialists were deployed to examine the suspicious vehicles near the base.

Temporary Chief Constable Maggie Blyth said officers believed the immediate threat had been contained, although she cautioned that the inquiry was continuing and declined to speculate on possible motives or whether terrorism charges would ultimately be pursued.

RAF Fairford is one of the United Kingdom’s most important military installations and serves as a key operating base for the United States Air Force. The facility has recently been used by American aircraft during defensive operations linked to heightened tensions in the Middle East, making security around the base particularly sensitive.

Following the arrests, the US Department of Defense raised the threat level at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, home to the USAF’s 48th Fighter Wing, to its second-highest security category. A US Air Force spokesperson said personnel remained vigilant but declined to discuss specific force protection measures.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham said he was receiving regular updates on the incident, describing it as deeply concerning for residents and urging the public to avoid speculation while investigators established the facts. UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting also confirmed he had spoken with his US counterpart, Pete Hegseth, as British and American authorities coordinated their response.

US President Donald Trump commented separately on the arrests, claiming the suspects had been “looking to do big damage.” His remarks represent the US president’s assessment, while British investigators have not publicly disclosed the alleged intentions of the five men or presented evidence in court.

The confirmation that the suspects are British nationals from London shifts the investigation away from questions of foreign infiltration and towards domestic counter-terrorism concerns. As forensic examinations and interviews continue, the case is expected to shape future security measures around Britain’s strategic military facilities and deepen scrutiny of threats targeting critical defence infrastructure.
