Five British Men Released on Bail After RAF Fairford Terror Arrests

Five British men arrested near RAF Fairford, a Gloucestershire air base used by the US military, have been released on police bail while counter-terrorism officers continue investigating suspected terrorism and explosives offences. The men, all London residents aged between 23 and 25, remain under investigation and have been placed under strict conditions governing their movement and contact with others.

The arrests followed an early-morning alert on Sunday after a local resident reported suspicious vehicles and masked men near the base. Three vans were subsequently examined by armed police and specialist bomb-disposal teams, while authorities declared a major incident and evacuated about 85 households in nearby Whelford.

The suspects were initially arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act before being further arrested on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act. Counter Terrorism Policing said on Monday that the men had been released following extensive interviews but stressed that the decision did not mean the investigation had ended.

Laurence Taylor, a senior officer with Counter Terrorism Policing, said investigators were pursuing several lines of inquiry, including whether the men could have been acting on behalf of a foreign state. Authorities have not established such a connection, and investigators are also considering other possible motives.

The possibility of an Iranian connection has attracted particular attention because RAF Fairford has been used by US aircraft during military operations against Iran. Iran's embassy in London has denied any involvement, while British authorities have cautioned against drawing conclusions before the investigation is complete.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said a foreign actor was “clearly” involved, but did not provide evidence publicly to support that assessment. His comments came as the five suspects were released on bail and as British investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The distinction is important: being released on bail does not mean the men have been cleared, but neither does their arrest establish that they intended to carry out a terrorist attack. They have not been charged in connection with a completed attack.
