Pink Faces Backlash After Sharing Refund Call Over Macklemore’s Ed Sheeran Set
Pink has come under fire after amplifying calls for Ed Sheeran fans to receive refunds over Macklemore’s politically charged opening performance during the singer’s US tour.
Singer Pink has found herself at the centre of a growing music industry controversy after sharing an Instagram post urging Ed Sheeran to apologize and offer refunds to concertgoers following Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian opening set at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The backlash began after Macklemore, who is opening selected dates of Sheeran’s North American tour, used his performance to voice support for Palestine. Wearing a keffiyeh, the rapper told the crowd “Free Palestine” and performed his protest song Hind’s Hall, while imagery related to the Gaza conflict appeared on stadium screens. The performance drew loud applause from some fans but prompted others to walk out and accuse the concert of becoming a political event.
Pink entered the debate by reposting a message from advocacy group StopAntisemitism, which described the performance as “awful” and argued that Jewish fans had been “ambushed” at a concert they attended to see Ed Sheeran. The post called for apologies and ticket refunds, and Pink added her own brief caption: “Awful.”
Her intervention quickly shifted attention from Macklemore to Pink herself. Critics argued that Ed Sheeran should not be held responsible for the political remarks of an opening act, while others accused Pink of amplifying a message they viewed as dismissive of Palestinian suffering. The disagreement spread rapidly across social media, where supporters and opponents debated whether artists should use concert stages for political advocacy.
Meanwhile, the original controversy continues to build. The Israeli-American Council has launched a petition urging Sheeran and tour organizers to remove Macklemore from the remaining tour dates, alleging that his performance crossed the line from activism into divisive political messaging. As of now, neither Sheeran nor his management has announced any changes to the tour schedule, and Macklemore remains listed as a supporting act for upcoming performances.
Macklemore has since defended his remarks, insisting that his message was directed at supporting Palestinian freedom and opposing civilian suffering rather than expressing hostility toward Jewish people. His clarification has done little to calm the wider debate, which continues to divide audiences along political and cultural lines.
Importantly, there is no official refund programme for Ed Sheeran’s concerts. The calls shared by Pink remain part of a public campaign rather than a policy adopted by the tour or its organizers.
