Nigeria’s Newest Mobile Operator Begins Full Commercial Operations

Nigeria’s telecommunications industry has welcomed a new player as Lebara Nigeria officially commenced full commercial operations nationwide on Monday, September 14, 2026, becoming the country’s newest mobile operator to compete with MTN Nigeria, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile.

The launch marks Lebara’s formal entry into one of Africa’s largest telecom markets as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), meaning it delivers mobile services using existing telecommunications infrastructure rather than building its own nationwide network. The company says its focus is on providing affordable voice, SMS and data services while expanding digital connectivity through both physical SIM cards and eSIM technology.

Customers can obtain Lebara SIM cards through more than 1,000 registered retail agents across Nigeria, including Slot stores, or activate services digitally through the My LebaraNG mobile app. The company said it completed the expansion of its nationwide distribution network before launch to ensure immediate accessibility from day one.

The availability of both physical SIMs and eSIM activation gives users greater flexibility, particularly owners of newer smartphones that support embedded SIM technology without requiring a physical card.

Lebara Nigeria’s Chief Executive Officer, Teniola Stuffman, described the nationwide rollout as a defining moment for the company’s Nigerian operations.

“We are excited to officially go live and make Lebara SIMs available to Nigerians. This is an important step for us as we begin to bring our services directly to customers,” Stuffman said.

She added that the company’s long-term strategy goes beyond basic mobile connectivity.

“Our focus is on making connectivity simple and accessible while building digital experiences that give our customers more value.”

Lebara enters a market long dominated by MTN, Airtel, Globacom and 9mobile, operators that collectively serve millions of mobile subscribers across the country. As an MVNO, Lebara is expected to compete through pricing, customer experience, digital onboarding and innovative mobile services rather than extensive physical infrastructure.

Industry observers say the arrival of another nationwide operator could increase competition in Nigeria’s fast-growing digital economy, particularly as demand rises for affordable data, seamless mobile banking and flexible eSIM adoption.

The launch also reflects a broader evolution in Nigeria’s telecommunications sector, where virtual network operators are beginning to complement traditional carriers by expanding consumer choice and accelerating digital innovation. If Lebara succeeds in delivering competitive pricing and reliable service, its entry could reshape expectations in one of Africa’s most vibrant mobile markets.
