Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has commissioned the production facility of Anchorage Pharmaceutical Industries Limited in Trans-Ekulu, Enugu, in a move expected to expand local medicine manufacturing and create employment opportunities in the state.

The commissioning took place on Thursday, October 22. Anchorage is an indigenous pharmaceutical manufacturer established to produce and supply medicines to hospitals, pharmacies and other healthcare institutions. According to its management, the company prioritises product quality, patient safety and compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.

Speaking at the event, Mbah described the investment as an important contribution to public health, economic development and opportunities for young people. He said the facility could create jobs, internship placements and skills-transfer opportunities, helping trained workers build their careers in Enugu.

The governor also disclosed that his administration would explore commercial arrangements with Anchorage to supply medicines to the state’s central medical stores and primary healthcare facilities. He said Enugu was developing 260 Type-2 primary healthcare centres, which would require reliable supplies of essential medicines to serve their communities. The proposed arrangement presents an opportunity for cooperation between the state government and the company.

Rear Admiral Allison Madueke (rtd), chairman of Anchorage’s board, commended the state government for what he described as an investment-friendly business environment. He said the company was established to create employment, develop local talent and contribute to economic growth.

The company’s managing director, Chima Madueke, said Anchorage was founded around the principles of quality and wellness. He stated that the company had obtained the necessary approvals and clearances from the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria. He also said the company was open to supplying hospitals, healthcare institutions and pharmacies directly.

The commissioning comes as Nigeria continues to pursue greater domestic pharmaceutical production as part of efforts to strengthen medicine security. In May 2026, NAFDAC said the country had historically depended on imports for about 70 per cent of its medicines, highlighting the importance of expanding local manufacturing capacity.

The agency has supported policies aimed at encouraging domestic pharmaceutical production and reducing reliance on imported medicines. Increased local manufacturing is expected to strengthen the supply chain, create industrial and employment opportunities, and improve the country’s capacity to meet its healthcare needs.

For Enugu State, the commissioning of Anchorage Pharmaceutical Industries represents an addition to its industrial base and an opportunity to strengthen collaboration between private manufacturers and public healthcare institutions. It represents another step in its drive to attract private investment and develop industries that can support economic activity while contributing to essential public services.
