US Navy Warship Goes Dark in South China Sea, Crew Endures Four Days Without AC
The USS Benfold suffered an engineering failure involving its generators on July 24 during routine operations in the Indo-Pacific, according to the US 7th Fleet.
A US Navy guided-missile destroyer spent four days without normal power while operating in the South China Sea last month, leaving its crew without functioning toilets, galley services, air conditioning and some potable water in the region’s intense summer heat.
The vessel, USS Benfold (DDG-65), suffered an engineering casualty involving its generators on July 24 while conducting routine operations in the Indo-Pacific, according to the US 7th Fleet. The loss of electrical power disrupted several of the basic systems that sailors rely on every day aboard the nearly 10,000-ton Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
The incident is striking partly because of where it happened. The Benfold was operating as part of the USS George Washington Carrier Strike Group, one of the US Navy's major forward-deployed formations in the Indo-Pacific, at a time when the South China Sea remains one of the world's most closely watched maritime security environments. The carrier group had entered the South China Sea after transiting the Luzon Strait in late July.
For the sailors aboard Benfold, however, the immediate concern was much more basic than geopolitics.
Without sufficient power, the ship could not operate its normal air-conditioning system, a serious problem in the hot and humid South China Sea. Toilets and galley services were also unavailable, while potable-water supplies were affected. The Navy said there were no injuries among the crew, praising the sailors for their resilience and professionalism during the breakdown.
The disruption also meant the destroyer could not simply continue its mission as normal. The wider carrier strike group stepped in to support the stricken vessel, with the cruiser USS Robert Smalls providing prepared meals for the crew while the engineering problem was being addressed. Benfold was subsequently towed to Subic Bay in the Philippines for repairs.
The Navy has not publicly identified the precise cause of the generator failure. Commander Matthew Comer, a 7th Fleet spokesman, said the cause remained under investigation, leaving open questions about what triggered the loss of power and whether there were underlying equipment or maintenance issues.
That uncertainty is likely to attract attention because Benfold is not an auxiliary vessel whose primary purpose is logistics. It is an Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, designed to provide air defence, missile capabilities, surveillance and other combat functions as part of a carrier strike group. A prolonged loss of electrical power can therefore affect much more than crew comfort; it can reduce a warship's ability to perform its mission.
The episode also comes after another US destroyer experienced a power-related problem earlier this year. In May, USS Higgins lost power and propulsion for several hours in the Indo-Pacific because of an electrical-system malfunction, according to reporting on the incident. The recurrence does not by itself establish a wider fleet-wide problem, but it does put greater attention on the reliability of the systems that keep modern warships operational.
For the US Navy, that question is particularly important as Washington places greater strategic emphasis on the Indo-Pacific. American warships routinely operate in and around the South China Sea, including freedom-of-navigation operations intended to challenge what Washington considers excessive maritime claims. Benfold itself has previously conducted such operations in the disputed region.
Modern warships are extraordinarily sophisticated machines, packed with sensors, weapons, communications equipment and computer systems. Yet the Benfold incident is a reminder that their effectiveness ultimately depends on something far less glamorous: reliable power, cooling, water and basic engineering systems.
The destroyer has since undergone repairs at Subic Bay, with the work reported completed earlier this month before the vessel returned to service. The Navy's investigation into the generator failure will be important not only for Benfold but also for determining whether lessons need to be applied elsewhere across the fleet.
For a US Navy operating in an increasingly contested maritime environment, the incident offers a simple but consequential lesson: high-end military technology is only as dependable as the engineering systems keeping it running. In the South China Sea, where a warship may be expected to respond quickly to a crisis, four days without basic power is more than an uncomfortable breakdown—it is a reminder that readiness begins long before a weapon is ever fired.
