UAE Hits 50°C for First Time This Year as Peak Summer Reaches Its Climax

The United Arab Emirates has recorded its first 50°C temperature of the year, underscoring the intensity of one of the hottest summers in the Gulf even as the country moves towards the final stretch of its peak heat season.
According to the UAE's National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the highest temperature was recorded in Al Shawamekh, Abu Dhabi, where the mercury reached 50°C at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday. The milestone came just a day after temperatures climbed to 49.6°C in Sweihan, near Al Ain, signalling a steady rise in temperatures across the country.
The extreme heat coincides with Jamrat Al Qayth, a traditional weather period recognised across the Arabian Peninsula as the hottest phase of the summer. The 40-day season, which began in early July, is expected to continue until August 10, after which temperatures gradually begin to ease despite summer continuing across much of the region.
During this period, daytime temperatures in coastal cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi typically range between 41°C and 43°C, while inland and desert areas frequently experience temperatures above 45°C. During intense heatwaves, temperatures can exceed the 50°C mark, making outdoor activities particularly challenging during the afternoon hours.
The scorching conditions have become a defining feature of life in the UAE each summer, influencing everything from working hours and travel plans to energy consumption and public health. Authorities routinely advise residents to avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day, remain hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activities to reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
Despite the intense daytime temperatures, meteorologists say seasonal changes are already beginning to emerge. As Jamrat Al Qayth draws to a close, humidity levels are expected to increase, particularly in coastal areas, while isolated cloud formation may occur over the Hajar Mountains. These changes typically signal the gradual transition away from the harshest phase of the Gulf summer.
The latest temperature reading also comes as many parts of the world continue to experience prolonged periods of extreme heat, adding to growing concerns over the frequency and intensity of heatwaves. While the UAE is no stranger to temperatures approaching 50°C, climate experts say rising global temperatures are making extreme weather events more common across many regions.
For visitors planning trips to the Emirates, the coming weeks remain among the hottest of the year. However, the approach of mid-August traditionally marks the beginning of a gradual shift towards slightly milder conditions, even though high temperatures are expected to persist well into September.
For readers of FollowGlobalTrends.com, the story is a reminder that weather is increasingly becoming a global headline. From Europe and North America to the Middle East and Asia, extreme temperatures are reshaping how people travel, work and live, making climate resilience an issue that extends far beyond national borders.
