NDC Condemns Alleged Attacks on Members in Enugu

ENUGU — The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned what it described as coordinated attacks on its members in Enugu State, alleging that several supporters were assaulted during a political mobilization activity and calling for an immediate investigation by security agencies.

In a statement released on Sunday, the party said the incident represented a dangerous escalation of political violence as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather pace. The NDC urged the police and other security agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible, insisting that democratic participation must never be met with intimidation or violence.

Party officials alleged that members were attacked while carrying out lawful political activities in parts of Enugu, resulting in injuries to several supporters. The NDC said it had documented the incident and would pursue legal channels to ensure accountability, while urging its members to remain peaceful and avoid reprisals.

The party stopped short of naming specific individuals as perpetrators, but accused unnamed political actors of attempting to create fear among opposition supporters ahead of the next election cycle. Those allegations have not been independently verified, and police authorities had not publicly confirmed the claims at the time of reporting.

The incident has renewed concerns over the increasing tension surrounding political activities across Nigeria. Civil society organizations and election observers have repeatedly warned that early episodes of intimidation, hate speech and violence can undermine public confidence long before formal campaigns begin.

The NDC called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and community leaders to work together to guarantee a level playing field for all political parties, arguing that credible elections begin with protecting citizens’ freedom to organize and campaign without fear.

As Nigeria gradually enters another election season, the Enugu incident serves as a reminder that the credibility of the 2027 polls will depend not only on what happens on election day, but also on whether political competition is conducted in an atmosphere of safety, fairness and respect for democratic rights.
