MTN Crosses 100 Million Subscribers as Nigeria's Telecoms Base Hits 195 Million

MTN Nigeria has reached a historic milestone by becoming the first mobile network operator in the country to exceed 100 million active subscribers, underscoring its dominance in Africa's largest telecommunications market as national mobile connections continue their steady recovery.

Fresh industry statistics released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) show MTN's active subscriber base rose from 98.64 million in June to 100.86 million in July 2026, an increase of 2.22 million active lines in just one month. The broader telecoms industry also expanded significantly, with Nigeria's total active mobile subscriptions climbing to 195.11 million, up from 192.23 million in June.

The latest figures give MTN more than half of Nigeria's mobile market, with a market share of about 51%. Airtel remains the second-largest operator with over 66 million subscribers, while Globacom and T2 Mobile (formerly 9mobile) account for the remaining share of the market.

The rebound reflects more than simple customer acquisition. Industry analysts note that Nigeria's subscriber numbers have been recovering following the disruption caused by the enforcement of the National Identification Number (NIN) and SIM registration policy, which led to millions of inactive or unverified lines being disconnected before eligible users were gradually restored. As a result, the NCC's figures represent active subscriptions rather than unique individual users, since many Nigerians own multiple SIM cards.

Beyond subscriber growth, the industry's real battleground is increasingly data. Rising smartphone adoption, video streaming, digital banking and cloud-based services are driving heavier internet usage across the country, prompting operators to invest aggressively in 4G, 5G and fibre infrastructure to meet growing demand.

For MTN, the milestone strengthens its position not only as Nigeria's largest telecom operator but also as one of the continent's most influential digital infrastructure companies. The company's expanding customer base provides a wider platform for mobile financial services, enterprise connectivity and digital products that extend far beyond traditional voice calls.

Nigeria's telecom sector is now edging closer to reclaiming the 200 million active-line threshold it once exceeded before the NIN-SIM verification exercise reshaped the market. As connectivity becomes central to commerce, education and financial inclusion, the next phase of competition is likely to depend less on adding SIM cards and more on delivering faster networks, reliable service and meaningful digital experiences to millions of connected Nigerians.
