Microsoft Offers Voluntary Buyouts to 60,000 Employees

Software giant Microsoft offers voluntary buyouts to approximately 60,000 personnel across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and India. The program gives staff an opportunity to leave voluntarily with financial severance and career transition support as the company recalibrates its headcounts.

The initiative was detailed in an internal memo to employees by Executive Vice President and Chief People Officer Amy Coleman on Monday. The buyout program is open to employees up to level 70, which includes roles up to vice president tier within participating organizational units. The pool represents roughly 27 percent of Microsoft’s global workforce of 223,000 people.

Eligible workers who decide to accept the Voluntary Exit Offer will have until early December to finalize their paperwork. Those participating will conclude their employment on December 31, 2026.

Eligible Divisions and Excluded Teams Participation varies by department and operational priority. Business units participating in the voluntary departures include divisions across Windows, Xbox, Copilot, and general corporate finance.

Teams deemed indispensable to ongoing platform reliability and cloud expansion are excluded from the buyout offer. Personnel assigned to physical data center operations, critical sales units, and direct client deployment teams will not participate.

In her note to staff, Coleman explained that the Voluntary Exit Offer represents an evolution in how Microsoft handles organizational change. She emphasized that the program gives employees considering a career transition outside the company greater autonomy to leave on supportive terms.

The package provides a standard severance model aligned with regular severance benefits, calculated based on tenure, along with dedicated career placement services and healthcare continuation options.

Surging AI Infrastructure Costs Reshape Tech Budgets The sweeping buyout program arrives against a backdrop of historic capital expenditures driven by artificial intelligence. Microsoft has invested aggressively in advanced data centers, sovereign infrastructure, and specialized GPU clusters to supply computational power for OpenAI, Anthropic, and enterprise cloud customers.

Capital expenditures across recent quarters have soared beyond $50 billion as major tech firms compete for computing dominance. This surging infrastructure spending has prompted executive leadership to tightly review discretionary operating costs and streamline middle management layers.

The new program follows a more targeted voluntary retirement offer extended in April to longtime U.S. personnel, as well as targeted layoffs affecting 4,800 workers earlier this summer. Company representatives indicated that while the voluntary retirement offer saw roughly 30 percent uptake, the broad buyout program is expected to draw a more modest percentage of applicants.

By leaning on voluntary separations instead of mandatory reductions in force, Microsoft aims to reduce employee friction while providing organizational agility heading into 2027.
