Media Power Couple Reuben and Kike Abati Debut Collaborative Podcast in Lagos

Veteran media personality Dr Reuben Abati and his broadcaster wife, Kikelomo Abati, have expanded their public footprint into digital audio with the launch of a new joint podcast titled Reuben and Kike Abati. The venture was officially unveiled on Saturday at Eko Hotels and Suites in Lagos during a grand ceremony celebrating her 20 years in the media industry alongside the seventh anniversary of her acclaimed talk show, Real Talk With Kike.

The high profile gathering brought together senior government representatives, business executives, civil society figures, and creative industry stakeholders. Organized under the theme, The Future of Nigeria: Where Leadership, Innovation, Culture and Media Converge to Shape Nation Building, the event provided a platform to examine governance reforms, civic accountability, national heritage, artificial intelligence, and the evolving responsibilities of mass media. Compered by Yemi Shodimu and Riyah Abdul, the celebration also featured musical performances by saxophonist BeeJay Sax, along with grants, awards presentations, and a raffle draw.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of Lagos State Deputy Governor Dr Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, the Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Barrister Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, emphasized that effective governance requires concrete results rather than rhetoric. Salu-Hundeyin cited regulatory milestones under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's THEMES+ agenda, such as the Lagos State Electricity Law 2024 and the establishment of the Lagos State Electricity Regulatory Commission, noting the state is pursuing a target of 97.5 per cent electricity availability by 2030. A government that cannot acknowledge what is broken cannot fix it, she stated, urging public institutions to cut bureaucratic delays while appealing to private investors to strengthen domestic supply chains.

The event also hosted an engaging panel discussion titled Fixing the System: Policy, Accountability, and the Next 10 Years, moderated by Mrs Abati. The panel brought together Dr Reuben Abati alongside Air Peace Chairman Dr Allen Onyema, Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Chairman Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa. The panellists examined the institutional bottlenecks hindering policy execution, highlighting the critical link between efficient public administration and sustainable economic productivity. Other prominent figures in attendance included Sahara Group Executive Director Kola Adesina and Rise Networks founder Dr Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji.

The unveiling represents a notable new chapter in Kikelomo Abati's media journey. Over the past two decades, she has built a substantial broadcast profile, particularly as the convener of Real Talk With Kike across Silverbird and Inspiration FM networks, alongside running corporate consulting firm Z-Edge Limited and the non-profit Kike Hub Foundation. Teaming up with her husband, a seasoned columnist, television anchor, and former presidential spokesman, creates a formidable pairing that combines extensive institutional memory with contemporary conversational broadcasting.

The debut of the joint podcast underscores a wider transformation within the Nigerian media landscape, where established traditional broadcast journalists are increasingly migrating into digital, on-demand audio formats. By transitioning their collaborative discussions to an independent podcast platform, the couple is tapping into an expanding audience that values long-form, analytical discourse on governance, politics, and culture outside conventional network schedules, reflecting how legacy journalism continues to reinvent itself in the digital age.
