Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71, his family has announced, bringing to a close the life of a medical doctor who served two terms as the chief executive of one of Nigeria’s major oil-producing states.

Uduaghan died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, according to a statement issued by his family and signed by Toju Anire Uduaghan. The family described his death as a profound loss to his relatives, the people of Delta State and Nigeria.

The former governor, who was born on October 22, 1954, died three days before his 72nd birthday. Channels Television reported, citing a family member, that he died in a hospital in Abuja after a period of illness. The family’s announcement did not specify the cause of death.

A medical doctor by profession, Uduaghan built his public-service career in Delta State before becoming governor. He served as the state’s Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003 and later as Secretary to the State Government from 2003 to 2007. He succeeded James Ibori as governor in 2007 and remained in office until 2015, completing two terms.

During his eight years in office, Uduaghan presided over a state whose economy is closely tied to oil and gas production, while development, infrastructure and the welfare of communities remained central issues in public debate. His administration pursued human and infrastructural development initiatives, according to the family’s statement announcing his death.

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has expressed sadness over Uduaghan’s passing, according to Channels Television. In a condolence message issued through his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Oborevwori extended sympathies to the late governor’s wife, Roli, his children, the Uduaghan family, the Itsekiri nation and the people of Delta State. He also acknowledged Uduaghan’s contributions to the state’s development.

The family remembered Uduaghan as a father, brother, uncle and respected patriarch whose life and public service touched people across Delta State and beyond. It expressed gratitude for his life and service and prayed for comfort for those mourning him. As of the reports available at the time of publication, funeral arrangements had not been announced.

Uduaghan’s death marks the loss of a former state leader whose career spanned medicine, public administration and electoral politics. His years in office and continuing place in Delta’s political history form part of the state’s wider record of governance in the Niger Delta, where questions of infrastructure, public services and the development of oil-producing communities remain significant to residents and successive administrations.
