Enugu Air Goes International With Non-Stop Enugu–Douala Flights

Enugu Air is set to make history on September 23, 2026, when it officially launches its first international route, introducing a non-stop service between Akanu Ibiam International Airport (ENU) in Enugu and Douala International Airport (DLA) in Cameroon.

The inaugural flight marks a significant expansion for the young airline, transforming it from a domestic operator into a regional carrier and creating the first direct international link between Enugu and Douala. The service will initially operate twice weekly—on Mondays and Wednesdays, using a 76-seat Embraer E170, a regional jet designed for efficient short-haul operations and flexible passenger capacity.

Speaking on the route launch, Ugonna Agubuokwu, Chief Operating Officer of Enugu Air, said the new service was designed to solve long-standing logistics and travel challenges faced by merchants and corporate travellers across the region. “This is more than the introduction of a new route; it is about creating stronger connections between Nigeria and Cameroon and making regional travel more accessible, convenient and seamless for our passengers,” Agubuokwu said.

The new route is strategically positioned to serve traders, entrepreneurs, students and families who frequently travel between southeastern Nigeria and Cameroon. By eliminating the need for connecting flights through other Nigerian or Central African cities, the service is expected to reduce travel time, lower logistical barriers and improve business mobility between the two neighbouring countries.

The launch also reinforces the growing importance of Akanu Ibiam International Airport as an international gateway for southeastern Nigeria. In recent years, the airport has undergone infrastructure upgrades aimed at supporting increased passenger traffic and attracting more regional and international airlines.

Industry observers believe the Enugu–Douala route could stimulate cross-border commerce, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture, logistics and wholesale trade. Douala is Cameroon’s commercial capital and one of Central Africa’s busiest business hubs, making it a strategic destination for Nigerian exporters and importers seeking faster access to regional markets.

The introduction of direct flights is also expected to strengthen economic ties under the broader vision of increasing intra-African connectivity, as airlines expand services between key commercial cities across the continent.

The international debut comes as Enugu Air continues expanding its route network following its entry into Nigeria’s aviation market. The airline has positioned itself as a carrier focused on improving connectivity for underserved regions, with plans to strengthen links between southeastern Nigeria and major domestic and regional destinations.

Aviation analysts note that regional routes are becoming increasingly important as African carriers seek to capitalize on rising demand for business and leisure travel within the continent, supported by initiatives promoting greater economic integration.

The inauguration of the Enugu–Douala service represents more than a new flight, it signals Enugu Air’s ambition to become a key regional connector. For passengers, businesses and the Southeast economy, the route offers a faster bridge to Central Africa while reinforcing Enugu’s emergence as an important international aviation hub.
