Elon Musk Sets US Political Donation Record With $446 Million
Elon Musk has donated about $446 million to political groups in the 2026 US midterm election cycle, setting a modern-era record as he directs substantial funding towards Republican efforts to retain control of Congress.

Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has cemented his position as the largest individual political donor in modern American history, contributing about $446 million to groups seeking to influence the 2026 US midterm elections, according to newly reported campaign finance filings.
The latest figures, published by The Washington Post on October 23, show Musk’s spending has grown sharply as Republicans seek to defend their majorities in Congress ahead of November’s elections. Much of the money has gone to political action committees aligned with the Republican Party, including groups supporting Senate and House candidates.
Musk’s largest reported contributions include nearly $216 million to America PAC, a political action committee he established to support conservative candidates and voter-turnout operations, $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund, which backs Republican Senate candidates, and $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which focuses on House races. These donations have placed him well ahead of other major individual donors in the current election cycle.
The scale of Musk’s spending has increased in recent months. In October, filings showed he made another series of substantial contributions to America PAC, including nearly $77 million during the first half of the month. The additional funding pushed his total for the midterm cycle close to $450 million, according to Forbes’ analysis of federal filings.
The money is being channelled through outside political groups rather than simply handed directly to candidates. Under US campaign finance rules, super PACs can accept unlimited contributions from individuals and corporations, provided they do not coordinate their independent spending with candidates’ campaigns. These groups use the funds for political advertising, voter outreach and other efforts intended to shape election outcomes.
Musk’s contributions have helped fuel a broader spending surge by wealthy donors and political organisations. The Washington Post reported that the 50 biggest donors and donor groups had contributed a combined $2.77 billion to the 2026 midterm cycle by October 23. Republican-leaning donors accounted for roughly $1.67 billion, compared with $832 million from Democratic-leaning donors, while the remainder came from bipartisan and special-interest groups.
The spending also reflects Musk’s renewed involvement in Republican politics after a public falling-out with President Donald Trump last year. Musk had said in May 2026 that he intended to scale back his political contributions, but his subsequent donations have made him a central financial force in the midterm campaign. The two men have since reconciled, and Trump presented Musk with the National Medal of Science earlier this month, according to the Associated Press.
Republicans are using the money to expand advertising and campaign operations as they face voter dissatisfaction over the economy, high prices and the administration’s policies. A spokesperson for Musk’s political operation has argued that the investments give Republicans a stronger chance of competing in close races. Democrats, meanwhile, have accused Republicans of trying to compensate for unpopular candidates and policies with large financial contributions.
Some of Musk’s spending has focused on competitive Senate contests, particularly Texas, where Republican nominee Ken Paxton is seeking election. The Senate Leadership Fund transferred much of the $168 million it received from Musk to Texas PAC, which supports Paxton; The Washington Post reported that the latter group had spent more than $140 million on advertising in the race. Musk has also funded groups targeting closely contested House districts.
The record underscores the growing role of exceptionally wealthy individuals in financing US elections, where large donations to independent political groups can shape the scale and reach of campaigns. Musk’s spending does not guarantee victory for the candidates and causes he backs, but it gives Republican-aligned organizations substantial resources for advertising and voter mobilization as control of Congress is contested.
