The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has officially launched its nationwide presidential campaign for the 2027 general elections. The opposition party selected Sokoto State as the host city for its national flag-off, drawing tens of thousands of residents into the streets.

The event marked the formal beginning of the party's bid for the presidency. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, running as the ADC presidential flagbearer, met an overwhelming reception as crowds flooded major transit routes across the metropolis.

Massive Motorcade Brings Sokoto to a Standstill

The national campaign flag-off began with a slow-moving procession from the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport. The motorcade took over three and a half hours to navigate through the city center to the party's state secretariat and rally grounds along Ilorin Road.

Everyday commercial life paused across major districts. Market stalls, transport hubs, and offices emptied out as residents joined the marching crowd on foot and on motorcycles.

Supporters traveled from all 23 local government areas of Sokoto State and neighboring northwestern communities. Chants demanding federal policy relief echoed through the procession as party flags filled the sky.

Party Centers 2027 Platform on Economic Relief

During the rally, party leaders declared that the national campaign would focus primarily on household affordability. The party framed the massive Sokoto turnout as an expression of widespread public frustration with inflation and living costs.

Spokespersons pointed to soaring food, transportation, and cooking fuel expenses as the primary drivers of voter discontent. The campaign outlined initial policy pledges, including targeted domestic refining incentives designed to lower petroleum product costs for ordinary citizens.

Party strategists also noted that competitive multi-party elections must serve as a referendum on voter welfare. They urged Nigerians to view their voter cards as direct tools of democratic accountability rather than loyalty to traditional political establishments.

Campaign Organizers Allege Administrative Obstacles

The national flag-off took place following reported disputes between event organizers and state authorities. ADC officials alleged that the Sokoto State Government declined requests for access to key public venues and stadiums.

According to campaign spokespersons, the inability to use state facilities failed to suppress turnout. Instead, supporters assembled directly on major public thoroughfares to hold the opening rally outdoors.

State government officials have not confirmed any targeted ban on opposition activities. Administrative representatives maintain that public facility access follows standard civic guidelines and security reviews.

National Tour Expands Across Northern Corridors

The Sokoto gathering serves as the opening chapter of the ADC's nationwide campaign tour ahead of the 2027 ballot. Opposition strategists plan to use the momentum from the North West to build cross-regional voter coalitions.

With the presidential campaign officially under way, the party plans to roll out state-level campaign structures and town-hall meetings across the country. Further campaign stops in the North Central and southern geopolitical zones will be announced in the coming weeks.
