Toyota and IVECO Launch Next-Generation Hydrogen Truck Partnership
Toyota and IVECO have joined forces to develop a new generation of hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks, aiming to accelerate zero-emission freight transport across Europe.
Japanese automotive giant Toyota and European commercial vehicle manufacturer IVECO have announced a strategic partnership to develop next-generation hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty trucks, marking a significant step toward decarbonizing long-haul freight transport.
The collaboration is being carried out under EMPOWER, a major Horizon Europe project funded by the European Union to advance zero-emission heavy-duty mobility. The initiative brings together leading automotive manufacturers and research partners to accelerate the commercial viability of hydrogen-powered trucks.
Under the agreement, Toyota will supply its latest third-generation hydrogen fuel cell systems, while IVECO will lead the overall vehicle development, engineering integration and real-world validation of the trucks. Both companies said the partnership combines Toyota’s decades of fuel cell expertise with IVECO’s experience in sustainable commercial transport.
The flagship vehicle, the IVECO S-eWay Fuel Cell, is expected to deliver substantial improvements over previous hydrogen truck models. According to the companies, the new platform will generate 300 kilowatts of power, offer a driving range of more than 900 kilometres, and achieve an operational lifespan exceeding 25,000 hours, while requiring only half the battery capacity of the previous generation.
Validation and testing are scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with on-road customer trials planned for the first half of 2027. The project is designed to evaluate the trucks under demanding commercial operating conditions before broader industrial deployment.
The partnership reflects growing momentum behind hydrogen as an alternative to battery-electric technology for long-distance freight. While battery-powered trucks are increasingly suited to regional distribution, manufacturers believe hydrogen fuel cells could offer faster refuelling, longer range and greater payload efficiency for heavy-duty logistics.
For IVECO, the initiative complements its broader multi-energy strategy, which includes battery-electric, renewable fuel and hydrogen-powered vehicles. Toyota, meanwhile, continues expanding the commercial application of its fuel cell technology beyond passenger cars into buses, trucks and industrial mobility solutions.
As governments and manufacturers race toward net-zero transport, the Toyota-IVECO alliance underscores a growing reality: the future of freight is unlikely to depend on a single technology. Instead, hydrogen is emerging as a powerful contender for the world’s heaviest transport tasks, where zero emissions must be matched by long range, durability and commercial practicality.
