Taylor Swift has returned to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 with “Patient Zero,” giving the pop superstar her 16th No. 1 single and extending one of the most remarkable chart runs in modern music.

The song enters the latest Hot 100 at No. 1, immediately taking over from Ella Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas,” which had spent a record-setting 24 consecutive weeks at the summit. Swift’s latest achievement places her third on the all-time list for most Hot 100 No. 1s, behind The Beatles with 20 and Mariah Carey with 19.

“Patient Zero” is also Swift’s 10th song to debut directly at No. 1. That puts her level with Drake for the most No. 1 debuts in Billboard Hot 100 history, adding another record-level statistic to a career already defined by chart milestones.

The song comes from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, the deluxe edition of Swift’s 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. Released on September 25, the expanded project added four new songs, and the impact was immediate: “Cleveland!” opened at No. 3, while “Babylon” and “Pink Clouding” landed at Nos. 4 and 5. That means Swift occupies four of the Hot 100’s top five positions in the latest chart.

The album itself has also benefited from the deluxe release. The Life of a Showgirl has returned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for its 13th nonconsecutive week, giving Swift simultaneous control of Billboard’s leading album and singles charts.

The latest achievement comes during another particularly strong period for Swift. “Patient Zero” follows earlier chart-toppers from the Showgirl era, continuing a run that has repeatedly translated new releases, deluxe editions and individual tracks into major chart performances.

The song’s visual campaign has also attracted attention. Its music video, which premiered at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, features Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell and was directed by Swift. The video draws on elements of ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers, with Swift describing the deteriorating house at its centre as a metaphor for a relationship falling apart.

Swift’s latest chart success also illustrates the scale of her ability to turn a new release into a broader cultural event. Rather than simply producing another successful single, the Encore rollout has placed several new tracks simultaneously near the top of the Hot 100 while lifting the parent album back to No. 1 on the Billboard 200.

For Swift, “Patient Zero” is another addition to a record book that has increasingly become part of the story surrounding her music. With 16 Hot 100 No. 1s and 10 songs that have opened at the summit, her latest achievement reinforces the extraordinary longevity of her commercial appeal, and places her within increasingly close reach of the two artists ahead of her on Billboard’s all-time No. 1 list.
