Portugal have officially confirmed their new team captain following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo from international football.

National team head coach Jorge Jesus announced that Bernardo Silva will wear the captain’s armband.

The decision was confirmed on Friday during a squad briefing in Oeiras. The national team is preparing for decisive UEFA Nations League fixtures against Denmark and Wales.

Seniority Decides the New Leadership Order

The selection follows a long-standing tradition within the Portuguese national team setup. Under this system, the captaincy is determined by senior international appearances rather than coach preference.

Silva currently leads the squad with 115 international caps. That tally makes him the most experienced active player in the current national team roster.

The 32-year-old playmaker steps into the role during a peak period of his career. Team officials praised his tactical intelligence, experience, and consistent influence on the pitch.

A Five-Man Senior Core for Nations League Tests

The head coach also outlined the leadership hierarchy behind Silva. Four other experienced players will support the new skipper as part of a formal five-man senior group.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes ranks second in seniority with 97 international caps. Defender Rúben Dias follows with 84 caps, alongside João Cancelo on 77 and Rúben Neves on 73.

These five senior players will share on-field leadership duties whenever substitutions or squad rotations occur.

The announcement coincided with the release of a 28-man squad for the upcoming international window. Portugal face Denmark on November 14 in Braga before traveling to Cardiff to play Wales on November 17.

The team needs only one point to secure top spot in their Nations League group.

Moving Forward After an Era-Defining Reign

The transition marks the formal start of a new chapter for Portuguese football. Ronaldo captained the national side for 18 years, leading his country to historic European championship triumphs.

His sudden international retirement ended a remarkable run of 234 appearances and 146 goals.

Team management revealed that preparations had initially included Ronaldo before his farewell announcement. However, the squad quickly shifted focus toward establishing stability under their new leadership group.

With Silva taking the armband, Portugal aim to blend experienced stalwarts with emerging young talent as they target qualification honors.
