Oluremi Tinubu Reaffirms Education as Cornerstone of Renewed Hope Agenda

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has reaffirmed that education remains one of the highest priorities of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, saying the government is committed to creating opportunities that empower young Nigerians through learning, discipline and excellence.

The First Lady made the remarks at the State House in Abuja while receiving Maryam Ibrahim Dan’Azumi, the 19-year-old winner of the 46th King Abdulaziz International Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Saudi Arabia. Maryam, who represented Nigeria against contestants from 133 countries, was accompanied by Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and other dignitaries.

Describing the teenager’s achievement as a source of pride for Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu praised her dedication, hard work and spiritual discipline, saying her success demonstrates the immense potential of the Nigerian girl child when given access to quality education and the right support system. She also commended Maryam’s parents for providing a strong moral and educational foundation that enabled her to excel on the global stage.

To further encourage her academic journey, the First Lady announced a ₦20 million cash reward and pledged to support Maryam’s pursuit of a master’s degree. She urged the young scholar to embrace mentorship and inspire other girls across the country to pursue excellence through education and perseverance.

Governor Inuwa Yahaya described Maryam’s victory as a remarkable achievement for both Gombe State and Nigeria, explaining that she progressed from local, state and national Qur’anic recitation competitions before emerging victorious at the international event. He said her accomplishment reflects years of commitment and disciplined preparation.

Maryam, in her response, thanked the First Lady for the honour and financial support, noting that competing alongside participants from across the world broadened her perspective and strengthened her determination to continue her education. She expressed hope that her story would motivate more young Nigerians to believe in the power of learning and persistence.

The First Lady’s latest remarks are consistent with her broader advocacy for literacy and educational access. In recent weeks, she has repeatedly called for greater investment in adult education, digital literacy and the protection of schools, describing education as fundamental to personal empowerment, economic opportunity and national development.

Her message also aligns with ongoing initiatives under the Renewed Hope Initiative, which has supported ICT learning centres, scholarships and educational interventions aimed at improving opportunities for children and young people across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.
