Nigerian-Born Yale Scholar Begins Landmark Fulbright Residency at UNILAG

The United States Mission in Nigeria has welcomed acclaimed Yale University scholar Dr. Cajetan Iheka to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) for a 10-month Fulbright academic appointment, in a move expected to deepen research collaboration and higher education ties between Nigeria and the United States.

Announcing the appointment on its official Facebook page, the US Mission invited Nigerians to “join us in welcoming Dr. Cajetan Iheka to Nigeria,” confirming that the Yale University Professor of English began his Fulbright residency at UNILAG on August 20.

Dr. Iheka is one of the most distinguished Nigerian-born academics in the United States. At Yale, he serves as Director of the Whitney Humanities Center, Chair of the Council on African Studies, Head of the Yale Africa Initiative, and Editor-in-Chief of African Studies Review, making him a leading voice in African literary, environmental and humanities scholarship.

During his 10-month stay at UNILAG, Dr. Iheka will play a central role in developing the university’s academic capacity. He is expected to lead seminars and professional training for early-career lecturers and postgraduate students, while also spearheading course development, contributing to the redesign of graduate curricula, and mentoring faculty through specialised teaching and scholarly publishing workshops.

University officials say the collaboration aligns with UNILAG’s broader ambition to expand international partnerships and expose its academic community to globally recognized scholarship. The Fulbright appointment is also expected to foster long-term research networks between Nigerian and American institutions, creating opportunities for joint publications, faculty exchanges and graduate research initiatives.
