News Helicopter Crashes in Los Angeles Commercial Area, Killing At Least Three

A television news helicopter crashed into a commercial district in the Los Angeles suburb of Chatsworth on Tuesday evening, killing at least three people and injuring another in a tragedy that unfolded while the aircraft was covering a separate deadly road accident nearby.

The helicopter came down shortly before 7 p.m. local time between two commercial buildings in the northwestern San Fernando Valley, about 25 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Emergency crews said the impact sparked a fire that engulfed several parked vehicles and storage containers before firefighters brought the blaze under control.

Authorities confirmed that three people were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth person was taken to hospital with injuries. Fire officials said at least one of those killed was a pedestrian who had been in a nearby parking lot when the aircraft crashed. Investigators are still working to determine how many people were on board because the helicopter was extensively damaged in the impact.

The aircraft has been identified as a KNBC/NBC Los Angeles news helicopter. Station anchors confirmed on air that they had lost contact with their flight crew moments before the crash, as the helicopter was reporting on an earlier collision involving an SUV and a Metro bus in the same area.

That earlier traffic crash had already left two people dead and several others injured, drawing multiple emergency responders and media helicopters to the scene. While the two incidents occurred within a short distance of one another, officials have not suggested that the bus crash caused the helicopter to go down.

More than 50 firefighters responded to the helicopter emergency, extinguishing flames that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers. No surrounding commercial buildings were reported to have caught fire, limiting what could have been an even greater disaster in the busy industrial area.

California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass both expressed condolences to the victims’ families, while praising first responders for their rapid response to two major emergencies in the same neighborhood within hours.

The cause of the crash remains unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have taken over the investigation and are expected to examine the aircraft’s wreckage, flight history and communications to determine what led to the fatal accident.

The disaster is a sobering reminder of the risks faced not only by emergency personnel but also by journalists covering breaking news from the air.
