Mystery Deepens Over Nigerian Woman Who Vanished After Landing in Qatar
Three days after landing safely in Doha, a 37-year-old Nigerian woman remains missing, with authorities racing to establish what happened after she walked out of the airport terminal.
A growing cloud of uncertainty surrounds the disappearance of a 37-year-old Nigerian woman who has remained unreachable since arriving in Doha, Qatar, prompting investigations by aviation authorities, Qatar Airways and the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
The woman, identified by her family as Saratu Jibo Yusuf, travelled from Lagos to Doha aboard Qatar Airways flight QR1408 on Tuesday for what was expected to be the beginning of a new chapter in her career. According to her brother, Jonathan Jibo, the family’s last contact with her came through WhatsApp while she was still connected to the aircraft’s onboard Wi-Fi shortly before landing.
What happened next has become the focus of an international search.
The family initially feared she had disappeared inside the airport after the person assigned to receive her failed to locate her at arrivals. However, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says CCTV footage reviewed with Qatar Airways confirms that Saratu landed safely, collected her luggage and exited the terminal.
That confirmation has shifted investigators’ attention beyond the airport. NCAA Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection Michael Achimugu said officials are now working to determine whether she reached the hotel linked to her Qatari visa and whether she was transported there through the hotel’s designated pickup service.
Achimugu explained that every Qatar visa is tied to a registered accommodation provider, making hotel records a critical part of the investigation. He added that if authorities establish that she never arrived at the hotel, security agencies in Qatar would be in a stronger position to launch a wider search. He also clarified that he is assisting the family in a personal capacity rather than acting within the NCAA’s formal investigative mandate.
For Saratu’s family, the disappearance is especially troubling because she is far from an inexperienced traveller. Her brother said she worked at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for nearly 12 years and had carefully planned the move to Doha, securing employment and paying for her accommodation months before leaving Nigeria. It was, however, her first trip outside the country, and she had no relatives or close friends in Qatar.
The case gained widespread attention after Jonathan shared an emotional appeal on social media, urging the Nigerian Embassy in Doha and Qatari authorities to help trace his sister. In a later update, he said her details had been forwarded to the Nigerian community leadership in Doha and subsequently to the Nigerian Embassy, with the family hoping for fresh developments as official offices reopen after the weekend.
Neither Qatar Airways nor Qatari authorities have reported any evidence of foul play, and no official statement has suggested that the woman was involved in a criminal incident. At this stage, investigators are treating the case as a missing person inquiry, while several key questions, including where she went after leaving the airport and why her phone has remained unreachable, remain unanswered.
As anxious relatives await answers, the incident has highlighted the vulnerability of Nigerians relocating abroad for work and the importance of swift cross-border cooperation in missing persons cases. Until Saratu Jibo Yusuf is found, the CCTV footage confirming her safe arrival offers reassurance—but not the closure her family desperately seeks.
