KLM’s First Airbus A350 Completes 90-Minute Maiden Flight
KLM has reached a major fleet renewal milestone after its first Airbus A350-900 successfully completed a 90-minute inaugural test flight ahead of delivery later this year.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has taken a significant step toward modernizing its long-haul fleet after its first Airbus A350-900 successfully completed a 90-minute maiden flight over southern France and the Bay of Biscay, marking the aircraft’s transition from production to final certification ahead of delivery.
The aircraft, registered PH-BVA and named “The Night Watch” after Rembrandt’s iconic masterpiece, departed Airbus’ facilities in Toulouse for a routine test programme before returning safely. Engineers used the flight to evaluate the aircraft’s systems, handling characteristics and overall performance before it is formally handed over to KLM.
The A350-900 represents the beginning of one of KLM’s most ambitious fleet renewal programmes in decades. The Dutch flag carrier has 22 Airbus A350-900s on order, with the aircraft set to gradually replace its ageing Airbus A330s and Boeing 777-200ER fleet, improving fuel efficiency and reducing carbon emissions on intercontinental routes.
Passenger service is expected to begin on 23 October, when the new widebody is scheduled to operate KLM’s Amsterdam–Toronto route. The airline says the A350 will offer a quieter cabin, lower fuel consumption and enhanced passenger comfort, reflecting the growing industry shift toward next-generation long-haul aircraft.
KLM has spent several years preparing for the aircraft’s arrival, including investing in pilot training and installing its first Airbus A350 full-flight simulator in the Netherlands. The preparations underscore the operational significance of introducing an entirely new aircraft type into the airline’s fleet.
The Airbus A350 has become one of the world’s most successful widebody aircraft since entering commercial service, prized by airlines for its long range, advanced composite construction and lower operating costs compared with previous-generation jets. For KLM, its arrival strengthens the carrier’s position in an increasingly competitive transatlantic and global long-haul market.
More than a successful test flight, the maiden journey of The Night Watch signals a new era for one of Europe’s oldest airlines. As KLM replaces older aircraft with a more efficient fleet, the A350 is expected to play a central role in balancing passenger growth with the aviation industry’s increasing focus on sustainability and operational efficiency.
