EFCC Chairman in Standoff with Ex-Governor: Yahaya Bello Accused of N80.2 Billion Fraud

Misuse of Public Funds: Yahaya Bello’s Alleged $720,000 Withdrawal

The revelation that former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, withdrew $720,000 from the state’s account to pay his child’s school fees has sparked a significant controversy. The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, disclosed this during an interview, shedding light on the misuse of public funds.

EFCC Chairman’s Revelation: Details of the Transaction

According to Olukoyede, Bello made the transfer directly from the government’s coffers to a bureau de change in anticipation of leaving office. The sum was an advance payment for his child’s education fees. This act, as highlighted by Olukoyede, is particularly concerning given the economic challenges facing Kogi State and the inappropriate use of public funds for personal purposes.

Olukoyede further emphasized that he reached out to Bello personally, offering him the opportunity to clarify the situation within the EFCC office. However, Bello declined, citing fears of harassment from an unnamed woman. This response raised suspicions and indicated an unwillingness to cooperate with the EFCC’s investigation.

Personal Invitation: EFCC’s Attempt to Engage Yahaya Bello

Despite Olukoyede’s efforts to extend a respectful invitation to Bello to address the issue, the ex-governor preferred not to engage directly. Bello even suggested that the EFCC conduct the investigation in his village rather than at the agency’s headquarters. This reluctance to engage directly with the EFCC raised further concerns about transparency and accountability.

EFCC’s Achievements and Commitment to Accountability

Olukoyede’s stance on the matter was firm. He emphasized the need for accountability, especially in public office, and expressed his commitment to upholding the law. He highlighted the EFCC’s achievements during his tenure, including significant recoveries of funds and convictions, underscoring the agency’s crucial role in combating corruption and ensuring justice for victims.

EFCC Chairman’s Firm Stand: Vow to Resign if Bello Not Prosecuted

The EFCC chairman’s determination to pursue the case against Bello was evident. Olukoyede vowed to resign from his position if Bello is not prosecuted. The EFCC is seeking to arraign Bello on multiple charges, including money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds amounting to N80.2 billion.

This case underscores the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions and ensuring the proper use of public funds. It also highlights the challenges in combating corruption and the need for strong institutions like the EFCC to promote transparency and integrity in governance.
