UEFA Confirms Madrid and Baku as Hosts of 2028 and 2029 Champions League Finals

UEFA has officially unveiled the host venues for two of European football’s biggest nights, confirming that Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium will stage the 2028 UEFA Champions League final, while the Baku Olympic Stadium in Azerbaijan will host the 2029 final.

The announcement provides long-term certainty for clubs, supporters and host cities, extending UEFA’s calendar of marquee events as preparations begin years in advance. Both stadiums were selected following UEFA’s bidding and evaluation process, with infrastructure, transport, fan experience and operational readiness among the key considerations.

The Metropolitano Stadium, home of Atlético Madrid, will become one of the few venues to host the Champions League final for a second time. It previously staged the 2019 final, when Liverpool defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2–0 in an all-English showdown watched by millions around the world.

With a capacity of more than 70,000, the modern stadium is widely regarded as one of Europe’s premier football arenas and has hosted numerous international sporting events since opening in 2017.

The Baku Olympic Stadium will host the 2029 Champions League final, marking another major milestone for Azerbaijan’s sporting ambitions. The 69,000-seat venue previously welcomed the 2019 UEFA Europa League final and has also staged matches during UEFA Euro 2020, demonstrating its ability to deliver major international football events.

For Baku, the final is expected to attract tens of thousands of visiting supporters while showcasing the city to a global television audience spanning more than 200 countries.

By confirming host cities several years ahead, UEFA allows national associations, local governments and tourism authorities to coordinate transport upgrades, accommodation capacity, security planning and fan engagement initiatives well before the finals take place.

The Champions League final remains the most prestigious match in European club football, generating billions of global television impressions and delivering significant economic benefits to host cities through tourism, hospitality and international exposure.

As Europe’s elite clubs continue their pursuit of continental glory each season, Madrid and Baku now have their own countdown underway. The decision reinforces UEFA’s strategy of balancing established football capitals with emerging international destinations, ensuring the Champions League final remains both a sporting spectacle and a global celebration of the game
