UBA Foundation Opens 2026 Essay Competition, Raises Prize Pool to ₦41 Million
UBA Foundation has opened entries for its 2026 National Essay Competition, increasing the total prize pool to ₦41 million and expanding one of Africa’s longest-running educational scholarship initiatives.
The UBA Foundation has officially launched the 2026 National Essay Competition (NEC), unveiling a significantly enhanced prize structure that raises the competition’s total value to ₦41 million and reinforces its commitment to nurturing academic excellence among young Africans.
The annual competition, one of the continent’s most prestigious essay contests for senior secondary school students, invites participants from across Nigeria to submit original essays on a contemporary topic that tests critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills. Organizers say the initiative is designed not only to reward exceptional writing but also to prepare students for leadership and global citizenship.
This year’s edition introduces the largest prize pool in the programme’s history. The Foundation said outstanding finalists will compete for scholarships and cash awards collectively valued at ₦41 million, reflecting a substantial increase aimed at supporting more talented students through higher education.
Beyond the monetary rewards, winners will receive educational scholarships to pursue undergraduate studies at any recognized African university of their choice. The scholarship model has remained a defining feature of the competition since its inception, helping hundreds of young Nigerians access tertiary education while promoting academic merit over financial background.
UBA Foundation’s Chief Executive Officer said the competition continues to serve as an investment in Africa’s future, noting that empowering young people through education remains central to the Foundation’s broader social impact agenda. The organization has consistently prioritized literacy, reading culture and youth development across the 20 African countries where the UBA Group operates.
Eligible applicants are expected to be senior secondary school students in Nigeria and must submit handwritten original essays alongside the required supporting documents before the announced deadline. Entries will undergo a multi-stage evaluation by independent academic assessors, with finalists invited to defend their essays before a panel of judges.
Since its launch more than a decade ago, the National Essay Competition has become a recognized platform for discovering outstanding young writers and future leaders. Many previous winners have gone on to pursue careers in medicine, engineering, law, public policy and entrepreneurship through the scholarships awarded by the Foundation.
The expanded ₦41 million prize fund signals more than a financial increase, it reflects the growing recognition that investing in education is one of the most powerful ways to build Africa’s next generation of innovators, thinkers and transformational leaders.
