Shanaya Kapoor is stepping into the spotlight with her official streaming debut in Student of the Year: After Dark.

The upcoming web series, produced by Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment and directed by Reema Maya, premieres exclusively on JioHotstar on November 13, 2026. The project represents a sharp departure from the glossy, musical romance of earlier franchise films, turning the familiar campus of St. Teresa’s College into a tense young adult murder mystery.

For Kapoor, the release marks the end of years of industry anticipation, setting her on a distinct path within mainstream Hindi entertainment.

A Psychological Shift for an Iconic Franchise

The Student of the Year universe first launched in 2012, helping introduce leading contemporary stars to Indian cinema.

However, After Dark completely reimagines the franchise's tone for a modern streaming audience. Rather than bright campus rivalries and dance competitions, the narrative centers on an intense mystery involving death, revenge, and hyper-competitive pressures among students.

Kapoor takes on the ambitious task of portraying twin sisters with contrasting personalities who become caught in the middle of a campus crisis.

Tackling Pressure and Dual Roles

Speaking about the project ahead of its premiere, Kapoor acknowledged both the excitement and the sleepless nights that come with fronting a major property.

She explained that she deliberately avoided treating the project as a legacy burden, choosing instead to focus strictly on her director's vision. Director Reema Maya noted that preparing for dual characters required rigorous emotional preparation, as the actress had to switch between two distinct psychological perspectives during demanding dramatic sequences.

Kapoor recently marked her 27th birthday alongside close friends, including Suhana Khan, Khushi Kapoor, and Ananya Panday, as promotions for the series ramped up across Mumbai.

What Lies Ahead for the Young Star

The premiere of After Dark is poised to serve as an important benchmark for Kapoor’s evolving acting career.

After earlier feature projects faced delays and restructuring across major studios, the move to headlining a prominent OTT thriller offers her a clear platform to demonstrate dramatic versatility. With streaming platforms increasingly driving youth culture and long-form narrative engagement across South Asia, industry observers are watching closely to see how audiences respond to her debut performance.

Student of the Year: After Dark will stream worldwide starting November 13.
