‘No Victory Is Worth a Life’: Obi Congratulates Adeleke, Condemns Osun Election Bloodshed
Peter Obi has congratulated Osun Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election while condemning the violence and loss of life recorded during the governorship election.
Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has congratulated Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election, while urging Nigerians not to overlook the lives lost during the tense electoral period.
Obi described Adeleke's victory as an important demonstration of the power of the ballot, saying the people of Osun had spoken and reaffirmed their right to choose their leaders. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Adeleke the winner after he secured 511,067 votes, defeating APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
But alongside his congratulations, Obi struck a more sombre note, calling for the victims of election-related violence and their families to be remembered and supported. He urged authorities to identify those who lost their lives, visit their families, offer condolences and provide appropriate compensation, regardless of the political party or side they supported.
His intervention comes against a troubling backdrop. Security and election-monitoring groups documented significant violence in the run-up to the August 15 poll. A Kimpact Development Initiative assessment recorded 73 election-related violent incidents and 29 deaths before election day, while the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development's tracker recorded a different tally of 34 incidents and 18 deaths. The differing figures underline the difficulty of establishing a single definitive toll, but both assessments point to a serious pattern of political violence.
Obi's message was therefore broader than a routine congratulatory statement. He argued that political victories should never come at the expense of human lives and called for Nigeria's democracy to mature to the point where elections are decided through issue-based campaigns, peaceful participation and the rule of law.
The timing also gives the statement a wider political significance. With Obi now preparing for the 2027 presidential election as the NDC candidate, the Osun poll offers both an example of voters exercising their power and a warning about the dangers that can surround electoral competition. His call for citizens to defend their votes while rejecting violence fits into a larger argument about making elections more credible and participatory.
For Adeleke, the new mandate brings its own responsibility. Having secured another four years, the governor now faces the task of governing a state where political divisions remain strong and where some families are mourning losses connected to the electoral process.
The result has settled who will occupy the Osun Government House. The more difficult democratic test is ensuring that future elections do not require Nigerians to pay for political victories with their lives
