Lionel Messi’s Last Tango: Argentina Icon Scores and Assists Twice in Emotional Farewell

Lionel Messi gave Argentina one final performance to remember, contributing to every goal as the national team defeated Benin 3–0 at the Monumental Stadium in Buenos Aires in an emotional farewell to the country's greatest football star.

Playing his 208th and final match for Argentina, Messi first supplied the corner from which Nicolás Otamendi headed the opening goal early in the second half. He then created the second for Nico Paz before completing the scoring himself from the penalty spot.

It was a fitting statistical full stop to a 21-year international career. Messi's penalty was his 126th goal for Argentina, extending his record as the country's leading scorer. He also finished as Argentina's most-capped player.

The match, billed as a final farewell and widely described as Messi's “last tango”, drew more than 85,000 supporters to the Monumental. The atmosphere was as much about gratitude as football, with fans giving the captain prolonged ovations and tributes surrounding his final appearance in the famous blue-and-white shirt.

Messi's farewell had been carefully arranged after he announced his international retirement in August. Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni had acknowledged that he wanted Messi to have the opportunity to say goodbye in front of his home supporters rather than allow his international career to end solely with the disappointment of the 2026 World Cup final.

For Argentina, the farewell also closed one of the most remarkable chapters in the country's football history. Messi endured years of intense criticism and comparisons with Diego Maradona before eventually leading the national team to the 2021 Copa América, the 2022 Finalissima, the 2022 World Cup and the 2024 Copa América. Argentina also reached the 2026 World Cup final during his final international campaign.

His relationship with the national team was not always straightforward. Early in his career, Messi carried the burden of expectations from a country that had long demanded another player capable of matching Maradona's influence. International defeats, including the 2014 World Cup final and successive Copa América final losses, intensified that pressure. His eventual run of major trophies transformed that relationship into one of admiration and national affection.

The farewell night reflected that transformation. Messi became visibly emotional during the celebrations and addressed the supporters after the match, reflecting on what representing Argentina had meant to him. He described wearing the national shirt for more than two decades as a source of immense pride and acknowledged how difficult it would be not to return for Argentina again.

The significance of the evening extended beyond Messi's individual numbers. Otamendi, another veteran of Argentina's golden generation, also played his final international match, making the occasion a symbolic transition for a team that will increasingly have to build its identity without two of its most experienced leaders.

Messi, however, is not retiring from professional football altogether. He remains with Inter Miami, where his playing career continues, meaning the Monumental farewell was specifically the end of his Argentina journey rather than the end of his career on the pitch.

For Argentina, the challenge now is to move into the next era without treating Messi's absence as an attempt to recreate the past. His final performance offered something more appropriate: a reminder of what he gave the national team, a celebration of the trophies that once seemed beyond reach, and a graceful goodbye from the player who ultimately turned years of national expectation into one of the most decorated international careers football has seen.
