Florida Man Who Swallowed Tiffany Jewellery Awaits Sentencing

A Florida man who swallowed Tiffany jewellery valued at more than $760,000 faces sentencing following his conviction in an Orange County courtroom. Jurors found 33-year-old Jaythan Lawrence Gilder guilty of robbery and grand theft after he executed a violent smash-and-grab heist at the Mall at Millenia in Orlando.

The bizarre incident culminated in a multi-week medical watch after Gilder ingested the four stolen diamond earrings during a highway traffic stop. Prosecutors confirmed that state authorities successfully recovered all pieces of the luxury haul after nearly two weeks of clinical supervision.

Elaborate Pretext and Violent Getaway Court records show the robbery occurred in late February 2025 at the upscale Tiffany & Co. boutique in Orlando. Gilder entered the luxury outlet claiming to represent a professional NBA basketball player who was seeking to purchase high-end diamond jewellery.

Store associates presented him with two extraordinary sets of diamond earrings for inspection. The merchandise included a 4.86-carat pair valued at $160,000 and an 8.19-carat pair priced at $609,500, bringing the total value to $769,500.

Once the display cases were cleared, Gilder grabbed the earrings and charged toward the entrance. When a retail employee attempted to block his escape, Gilder used physical force to shove the worker aside before fleeing into a waiting vehicle.

Highway Interception and Swallowed Evidence Orlando Police detectives quickly identified the getaway vehicle and tracked its movement westbound across the Florida Panhandle toward Texas. Florida Highway Patrol troopers intercepted the vehicle on Interstate 10 in Washington County after noticing it was operating without rear lights.

As troopers moved in to arrest Gilder, he resisted detention and swallowed small objects that investigators suspected were the stolen gems.

Officers transported Gilder to an Orlando hospital for medical observation. Under strict custodial monitoring, medical personnel and detectives recovered three of the earrings on March 10, with the fourth and final diamond retrieved days later.

Florida State Attorney Monique Worrell emphasized that the brazen robbery caused significant trauma beyond the steep financial loss.

"This case involved not only a significant financial loss, but also the safety of employees who were confronted with violence while simply doing their jobs," Worrell said following the jury verdict.

Pending Sentencing and Legal Consequences With guilty verdicts secured on both felony counts, Gilder remains in state custody while the court prepares for formal sentencing. Court schedules indicate the presiding judge will hand down the formal sentence on December 7.

Due to the extreme monetary value of the stolen goods and the violence used against store staff during the escape, Gilder faces substantial prison time under Florida sentencing guidelines.
