José Mourinho began his second spell in charge of Real Madrid with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Espanyol on Saturday, rescued by a late goal from new signing Carlos Espí in the opening game of the La Liga season.

The Portuguese coach returned to the club more than 12 years after ending his first tenure, and his comeback immediately delivered the kind of high-pressure drama that has long accompanied his career. Real Madrid took an early lead through Jude Bellingham, who headed in an Arda Güler cross in the ninth minute. Espanyol responded before half-time, with Alex Calatrava equalising in the 30th minute.

For much of the second half, Madrid struggled to turn possession and attacking talent into a decisive second goal. Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior were among the star names in the line-up, but both were still finding their rhythm after returning late from their post-World Cup holidays.

Mourinho eventually turned to his bench in search of the breakthrough, introducing Espí among a series of second-half changes. The decision paid off almost immediately. The 21-year-old striker, who joined Madrid from Levante this summer, struck in the 90th minute, converting a loose ball after Mbappé had been dispossessed to give the visitors all three points.

The result gave Mourinho a winning start, but it was hardly a flawless performance. Real Madrid's attacking quality was evident, yet the team also showed defensive vulnerabilities and periods of uncertainty that allowed Espanyol to remain in the contest. Spanish sports daily AS described the performance as disappointing overall, with Espí's late intervention ultimately rescuing Madrid.

Mourinho, however, focused on the positives, particularly the response of his substitutes and the team's determination to keep pushing after Espanyol had levelled. The victory also offered an early indication of the manager's emphasis on squad depth and competition for places as he attempts to rebuild a side that went without a major trophy last season.

The Portuguese's return comes with considerable expectations. His first Madrid spell, from 2010 to 2013, produced a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup. He has now returned with the club looking to re-establish itself at the top of Spanish and European football after a difficult period.

Mourinho also used his first post-match appearance to defend Vinícius after the Brazilian winger was repeatedly targeted during the match. The manager described the treatment as bullying, while acknowledging that Vinícius must also maintain his composure. His comments underline another familiar part of Mourinho's role: managing not only tactics and results but also the intense scrutiny surrounding his players.

For now, the scoreboard gives Mourinho exactly what he needed. Real Madrid have three points, Espí has made an immediate impression and the new manager has begun his return with victory. But the narrow escape at Espanyol also showed that there is considerable work ahead if this Madrid side is to challenge consistently at the highest level.

The broader significance of the result is that Mourinho's return will not ultimately be judged by dramatic opening-day victories alone. Real Madrid have brought back a manager associated with discipline, competitiveness and trophies because the club wants a stronger winning culture. Saturday's comeback provided an encouraging first step, but the real test will be whether Mourinho can turn moments of late resilience into sustained control, consistency and silverware over the long season ahead.
