Eliud Kipchoge Wins Melbourne Marathon With Course Record at 41
The Kenyan distance-running great claimed his 17th marathon victory, ending a three-year wait for another win with a record-breaking performance in Australia.
Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has returned to the winner’s circle, setting a new course record at the Melbourne Marathon in Australia with a time of two hours, nine minutes and 10 seconds. At 41, the two-time Olympic marathon champion delivered a commanding performance on his Melbourne debut, turning the race into another milestone in a career that has reshaped modern distance running.
Kipchoge crossed the finish line inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Sunday, October 11, after breaking away from his rivals during the closing stages of the 42.2-kilometre race. He increased the pace after the 30km mark, according to his post-race comments, and finished two seconds inside the previous course record. Australian runner Thomas Do Canto came second in 2:10:35, while compatriot Reece Edwards completed the podium in 2:14:33, according to World Athletics results.
The victory was Kipchoge’s 17th over the marathon distance and his first since winning the Berlin Marathon in 2023. The gap between victories makes the Melbourne result particularly significant for an athlete who has spent much of his career at the front of the sport. After the race, he said he believed his body was still capable of competing with younger runners, underlining his determination to remain competitive as he enters the later stages of his elite career.
The Melbourne race also forms part of Eliud’s Running World, a project through which Kipchoge aims to complete marathons on all seven continents over a two-year period. The initiative began at the Cape Town Marathon in South Africa in May, where he finished in 2:13:29, before he competed at the Porto Alegre Marathon in Brazil in July. Melbourne is the third stop on the journey, which combines competition with an effort to encourage wider participation in running and raise funds for the Eliud Kipchoge Foundation.
The project marks a different phase in Kipchoge’s career. Rather than concentrating solely on chasing records and major titles, he is using races around the world to engage local running communities and promote the sport’s wider social benefits. The foundation supports education and environmental initiatives, giving the tour a charitable purpose alongside its athletic ambitions.
Kipchoge remains one of the most influential figures in marathon running. He won Olympic gold in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and again in Tokyo in 2021, and he previously held the official men’s marathon world record. In 2019, he also ran 1:59:40 in Vienna in a special event that demonstrated the possibility of covering the distance in under two hours, although the performance did not qualify as an official world record because it was not achieved under standard record-eligible race conditions.
His Melbourne win does not erase the challenges that come with age or guarantee further victories, but it offers a clear reminder that his competitive ambitions remain alive. For the sport, the result is also a story about longevity: an athlete already celebrated for extraordinary speed and discipline continuing to test himself against a new generation, in new places and for a purpose that extends beyond the finishing clock.
As Kipchoge continues his seven-continent mission, his influence will be measured not only by the races he wins but also by the people he inspires to run. The Melbourne course record adds another achievement to his remarkable career, while the wider tour reflects a broader vision of sport as a means of bringing communities together and encouraging healthier lives.
