Chery Joins Global Top 10 as Chinese Automaker Surpasses 20 Million Vehicle Sales

Chinese automaker Chery Group has crossed a major milestone, surpassing 20 million cumulative vehicle sales worldwide and breaking into the global top 10 automakers as its international expansion gathers pace.

The company reached the 20-million mark on July 25, 2026, when its new Fulwin model became the 20 millionth Chery vehicle delivered to a customer. The achievement comes 29 years after Chery began producing vehicles and highlights the dramatic growth of a Chinese brand that has increasingly shifted its focus beyond its home market.

Chery's latest milestone is particularly notable because much of its recent growth has come from overseas markets.

In the first half of 2026, Chery Group exported 943,817 vehicles, representing a 71.5% increase from the same period a year earlier. The company said it set new monthly export records for four consecutive months, with an average of roughly one Chery-made vehicle heading overseas every 17 seconds.

The figures point to a significant change in the global automobile market.

Chinese carmakers have moved from being primarily domestic manufacturers to serious international competitors, expanding rapidly across Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America and other emerging markets. Chery is increasingly part of that shift, using brands including Chery, Omoda, Jaecoo and Exeed to build a broader international presence.

Chery's global customer base now stretches across more than 130 countries and regions, with nearly seven million overseas users, according to the company. That means roughly one in every three Chery users worldwide is now outside China.

The company's progress in Europe has been particularly striking.

Chery reported sales of about 174,000 vehicles in Europe during the first half of 2026, an increase of more than 212% year-on-year. Its expanding presence in the region illustrates the growing willingness of European consumers to consider Chinese brands, particularly as manufacturers compete aggressively on price, technology and electrified vehicles.

Chery is also increasingly betting on new-energy vehicles as it expands internationally.

The company sold 475,238 new-energy vehicles in the first six months of 2026, up 32.3% year-on-year. In June alone, new-energy vehicle sales exceeded 113,000 units, while total monthly sales reached 256,612 vehicles.

The growth is significant because Chery is entering global markets at a time when the automotive industry is undergoing one of its biggest transformations in decades.

Electric vehicles, plug-in hybrids and other new-energy technologies are changing consumer preferences and intensifying competition between established manufacturers and younger Chinese brands. Chinese automakers have benefited from large domestic production networks, extensive battery supply chains and years of investment in electrification.

Chery's rise also comes as global automotive rankings begin to reflect the changing balance of power.

Industry data for the first half of 2026 places Chery at number 10 among the world's largest auto groups by vehicle volume, alongside Chinese companies such as Geely and BYD. That marks a significant shift from the traditional dominance of Japanese, European and American manufacturers.

However, Chery's achievement should be viewed in the context of how different rankings measure the automotive industry. Some 2025 full-year rankings based on reported sales placed Chery outside the top 10, while other group-level rankings put it inside the leading ten.

That distinction does not diminish the underlying trend: Chery is growing rapidly enough to challenge established global manufacturers.

The company's 20-million-vehicle milestone is also a story about how quickly a relatively young automaker can build an international customer base.

Chery sold its first million vehicles in 2007. It then moved through the two-million, three-million and five-million milestones before accelerating its international expansion and reaching 20 million in 2026.

Much of that expansion has been driven by exports.

At a time when China's domestic automobile market has become fiercely competitive, international markets are providing Chinese manufacturers with another avenue for growth. Chery's first-half export figure alone exceeded 900,000 vehicles, giving the company a much larger global footprint than it had just a few years ago.

The rapid expansion, however, also brings challenges.

Chinese automakers face tariffs, regulatory requirements, trade restrictions and increasingly intense competition in mature markets. European governments and established car manufacturers are also paying closer attention to the speed at which Chinese brands are gaining market share.

For Chery, maintaining momentum will therefore require more than producing large numbers of vehicles. The company will have to continue building consumer trust, strengthening after-sales networks, meeting different regulatory standards and proving that its technology and quality can compete consistently across diverse markets.

For FollowGlobalTrends, Chery's latest achievement is another sign that the global automotive map is being redrawn.

The company that once focused largely on building its presence in China now has millions of customers across the world. Its 20-millionth vehicle is not simply a sales statistic; it represents the scale of China's transformation from an automotive manufacturing base into one of the industry's most aggressive global competitors.

Chery has reached 20 million.

The bigger question now is how far its global road can go.
