1,384 Dead, 5,500 Missing After Nepal and China Floods as Rescue Efforts Continue
Twelve days after catastrophic floods swept through Nepal and southwestern China, the combined death toll has risen to 1,384, with more than 5,500 people still missing as rescue operations continue.
Rescue operations entered their 12th day on Sunday as Nepal and China continued searching for thousands of people missing after one of the Himalayas’ worst flood disasters in recent history. Authorities say at least 1,384 people have died, while over 5,500 remain unaccounted for following the devastating floods and landslides that struck communities along the Nepal–Tibet border.
The disaster began on 26 August, when a massive glacier collapse on Mount Langtang Lirung triggered an ice-and-rock avalanche that evolved into a powerful debris flow. Torrents of water, mud and boulders tore through valleys, obliterating villages, hydropower facilities, roads and the strategic Gyirong border crossing linking Nepal with China’s Tibet Autonomous Region.
Search for survivors continues
Emergency crews from both countries are using helicopters, drones, sniffer dogs and heavy excavators to reach isolated settlements buried beneath hardened mud. Although hopes of finding survivors are fading, rescuers have reported several extraordinary recoveries in recent days, including people found alive after being trapped for more than a week inside collapsed buildings and tunnels.
Nepal has borne the overwhelming share of the casualties, with thousands of residents, workers and foreign tourists still missing. On the Chinese side, rescue teams continue searching flood-ravaged areas around Gyirong, where dozens have been confirmed dead and hundreds remain missing.
Communities cut off as humanitarian needs grow
The floods have displaced thousands of families into temporary shelters, while damaged highways and destroyed bridges have complicated the delivery of food, clean water and medical supplies. Several hydropower plants have also been severely damaged, disrupting electricity supplies and adding to Nepal’s growing reconstruction challenge.
Relief agencies warn that unstable terrain and continuing rainfall are slowing recovery efforts, with many mountain communities still inaccessible except by air. Officials say identifying victims has become increasingly difficult as bodies are recovered far downstream, including in neighbouring India.
Climate fears deepen after Himalayan disaster
Scientists believe the catastrophe was likely triggered by a glacier collapse, reinforcing concerns that rising temperatures are increasing the instability of Himalayan glaciers and the frequency of extreme flood events across South Asia. Nepal, despite contributing only a tiny fraction of global greenhouse gas emissions, has repeatedly called for greater international support to help vulnerable mountain nations adapt to climate-related disasters.
As the operation shifts gradually from rescue to recovery, the tragedy has become a defining reminder of the growing human cost of climate-driven disasters in the Himalayas. Beyond the staggering death toll, the destruction of communities, trade routes and critical infrastructure underscores the urgent need for stronger early-warning systems and regional cooperation to protect millions living downstream of the world’s highest mountains.
