The ongoing political rivalry between Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has taken a new turn. Wike has publicly declared that he has no regrets about not being chosen as Atiku’s running mate in the last election and has vowed to work against Atiku’s future political ambitions.
Wike’s Strong Response to Atiku
During a recent media interaction, Wike dismissed any feelings of disappointment over Atiku’s decision to pick Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State as his running mate for the 2023 election instead of him. He insisted that Atiku’s loss was a result of his own poor decisions, and if given another chance, he would ensure that Atiku loses again.
“I have no regrets about not being chosen as the Vice Presidential candidate. In fact, I am glad because it showed the kind of leadership Atiku represents. I told him he would lose, and he lost. If he contests again, I will make sure he loses again,” Wike boldly declared.
The PDP Crisis and Wike’s Role
The fallout between Wike and Atiku played a crucial role in the disunity within the PDP during the 2023 elections. Wike, alongside four other PDP governors known as the G5 Governors, openly opposed Atiku’s candidacy and refused to support him. Their demand was for the PDP national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, to step down, arguing that both the party chairman and presidential candidate should not come from the same region (North). When Atiku ignored their demands, Wike and his allies worked against him, leading to a divided PDP and a weakened opposition against the ruling APC.
Wike’s Political Influence and His Next Move
Now serving as the Minister of the FCT under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, Wike remains one of Nigeria’s most influential politicians. His political strength in Rivers State and beyond gives him the power to sway elections, particularly in the South-South region.
His recent statements indicate that the rift between him and Atiku is far from over. With the 2027 election approaching, political observers believe Wike might continue to align himself with the ruling APC rather than support the PDP.
Atiku’s Silence and the Future of PDP
So far, Atiku Abubakar has not responded to Wike’s latest remarks. However, there are growing concerns about PDP’s ability to remain united as internal conflicts persist. If the party fails to resolve its internal crises, it may face yet another major defeat in the next election.
The political tension between Wike and Atiku highlights the deep divisions within the PDP. As the 2027 elections draw nearer, Wike’s influence and his determination to stop Atiku will play a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s political landscape. Will the PDP find a way to unite, or will Wike’s continued opposition further weaken the party? Only time will tell.
