“We Are Sorry” – Nigerian Government Apologizes for Errors in Federal Appointments List

The Nigerian Presidency has issued an apology following the release of a federal appointments list that contained several errors. The list, intended to counter claims of ethnic favoritism by President Bola Tinubu, has instead drawn further criticism due to key omissions.

President Tinubu has come under fire in recent weeks, with critics accusing him of favoring individuals from his own ethnic group in key appointments. Among those voicing concern is Senator Ali Ndume, an All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmaker representing Borno South.

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV, Ndume accused President Tinubu of breaching the federal character principle—a policy designed to ensure equitable representation of all regions in government appointments.

“As a lawmaker, I have the right to criticize Tinubu, even though we belong to the same party,” Ndume stated.

In response to the growing criticism, the Presidency released a breakdown of Tinubu’s appointments by geo-political zones, in an attempt to demonstrate balance.

According to the list, the President has appointed:

  • 35 individuals from the North West
  • 29 from the South West (his home region)
  • 25 from the North Central
  • 24 from the North East
  • 22 from the South-South
  • 16 from the South East

However, observers quickly flagged inaccuracies in the list. One glaring omission was the absence of Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff—one of the most prominent figures in Tinubu’s administration. The oversight has fueled further criticism, with many arguing it reinforces claims of regional bias.

A full list of appointments released by the Presidency, excluding Gbajabiamila, can be found here.

Acknowledging the backlash, Sunday Dare, Special Adviser for Media & Public Communication and Presidential Spokesperson, took to social media to issue an apology.

“We have noticed a number of errors in the list of appointments tweeted. We are sorry. We will provide an updated list later. Thank you,” Dare wrote on X.

The Presidency’s promise to correct and update the list is expected to be closely watched, especially as concerns over ethnic equity and political inclusion continue to dominate national discourse.
