Violence Escalates in North Darfur: MSF Reports 56 Deaths

According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), at least 56 people lost their lives in El Fasher, the capital of Sudan’s North Darfur state, between last Friday and Wednesday. The escalating violence has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of residents in the region.

RSF Encircles El Fasher: Yale School of Public Health’s

The paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has reportedly encircled El Fasher, intensifying the conflict in North Darfur. A report from the Yale School of Public Health’s Humanitarian Research Lab confirmed significant conflict-related damage in the eastern and southeastern neighborhoods of El Fasher city between May 10th and 14th. The RSF’s actions have led to expanded ground fighting and bombardment in the city, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.

International Response: US Sanctions RSF Commanders

Amidst the escalating violence, the United States sanctioned two RSF commanders on Wednesday for their role in leading the paramilitary group’s operations in Darfur. The US Department of State expressed grave concern over the RSF’s military operation to encircle and besiege El Fasher, stating that it has endangered the lives of hundreds of thousands of civilians.

Civil War and Humanitarian Crisis

The conflict in Sudan between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and RSF erupted in April 2023, leading to widespread displacement and humanitarian suffering. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, over 8.8 million people have been displaced from their homes, and 24.8 million people are in urgent need of assistance. UN Deputy Special Representative for Sudan, Clementine Nkweta-Salami, highlighted the escalating hostilities in El Fasher, emphasizing the peril faced by the entire city due to the ongoing conflict.
