Turkey Takes Action Against Meta Over Instagram-Threads Data sharingl

Competition Authority Imposes Interim Measure

Turkey’s competition authority has taken action against Meta Platforms Inc, imposing an interim measure to inhibit data sharing between Instagram and Threads platforms. This move comes as the authority investigates potential abuse of Meta’s dominant market position.

Investigation Initiated in December

In December, Turkey’s competition authority launched an investigation into Meta Platforms Inc (META.O) over possible violations of competition law. The investigation focuses on the relationship between Meta’s Instagram and Threads platforms.

Interim Measure to Remain in Place

The competition authority has stated that the interim measure will remain effective until a final decision is reached. The concern is that the data obtained and merged through these two apps could violate competition law and cause irreparable damage in the market.

Fine Imposed on Meta

In addition to the interim measure, the Turkish authority has fined Meta 4.8 million lira ($148,000) daily as part of a separate investigation. This investigation pertains to a notification message sent by Meta to users regarding the sharing of data.

Insufficient Transparency in Data Sharing Notification

The authority found that Meta’s notification about data sharing among its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp services lacked sufficient information and transparency. Moreover, the notification was designed to guide users to approve data sharing, which was deemed inadequate to address anti-competition concerns.

Meta’s Response

As of now, a spokesperson for Meta has not provided immediate comment on the decisions made by the Turkish competition authority.
