Trump Affirms Two-Term Limit, Signals Intent to Pass Torch to Future GOP Leaders!

In a wide-ranging interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, U.S President Donald Trump addressed ongoing speculation about a possible third term, stating definitively that he intends to complete a second term and step aside afterwards. “I’ll be an eight-year president,” Trump said, describing a two-term presidency as a foundational principle he respects and values.

Though Trump previously floated the idea of a third run and acknowledged that some close allies continue to encourage it, he admitted the constitutional roadblocks make such a move highly improbable. “To the best of my knowledge, you’re not allowed to do it,” he told host Kristen Welker, referencing the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms in office.

Efforts to revise that rule have gained little traction. A proposed constitutional amendment by Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) to allow a third presidential term remains stalled, while Democrats, including Rep. Dan Goldman (D-N.Y.), have introduced counter-resolutions reaffirming the two-term restriction.

Despite his openness to hearing ideas, Trump dismissed the possibility of pursuing a third term via unconventional means, such as a write-in campaign or a handover from a proxy president. “People talk,” he said, brushing aside notions of subverting constitutional constraints.

Even with Trump 2028 hats hitting the market and sparking online chatter, the president insisted he’s more focused on leading effectively for four more years and then stepping aside for the next Republican leader. “I’m not looking to do that,” he said of a 2028 run. “I want to turn it over to someone great.”

Among the GOP figures he praised as capable successors were Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Trump described both as highly capable, noting Vance’s strong standing and Rubio’s significant responsibilities in his administration, including leading multiple agencies and recently stepping in as national security adviser.

“I think JD is fantastic,” Trump said, adding that his vice president might have an edge in a future Republican primary but stopping short of declaring him a successor. “It’s too early,” he cautioned.

As the 2026 midterm elections approach, Trump’s focus remains squarely on helping Republicans retain congressional control, despite historical trends working against the party in power. Brushing aside concerns about backlash to his aggressive use of executive authority, particularly over controversial tariffs and DEI rollbacks, Trump said he intends to campaign and fundraise heavily in support of GOP candidates.

“I think we’re going to break the pattern,” he said confidently. “We’ll hold both chambers. I’m going to be very active in making sure that happens.”
