On Saturday, May 10, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded in Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland, when 16-year-old Emmanuel Familola from Nigeria drowned while swimming in Lough Swilly. Emmanuel, along with his friend, 18-year-old Matt Sibanda from Zimbabwe, entered the water near Ned’s Point to retrieve a football. Unfortunately, both teenagers encountered difficulties due to the strong currents. A third friend managed to swim to safety and was hospitalized. Emmanuel was rescued and taken to Letterkenny University Hospital but sadly passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning. Matt’s body was recovered later that evening.
Community’s Outpouring of Grief
The Buncrana community has been deeply affected by the loss of these two young lives. A vigil was held at St. Mary’s Oratory, attended by hundreds, including family members, friends, local residents, and officials. Bishop Donal McKeown led the service, emphasizing the community’s unity and support for the grieving families.
Remembering Emmanuel
Emmanuel was a student at Scoil Mhuire in Buncrana and had recently completed a work experience program at the Department of Foreign Affairs in Dublin. During his funeral, symbols of his life were presented, including a Manchester City football jersey, reflecting his passion for the sport, and a Bible, signifying his deep faith. Parish Priest Fr. Francis Bradley described Emmanuel as having a “serene magnetism” that transcended social and cultural boundaries.
Support for the Families
In the wake of the tragedy, the local community rallied to support the families of Emmanuel and Matt. A GoFundMe campaign was launched, raising over €40,000 to assist with funeral expenses and other costs. The families expressed profound gratitude for the overwhelming support and solidarity shown by the community.
Emphasis on Water Safety
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers associated with open water swimming, especially in areas with strong currents. Authorities and community leaders are urging the public to exercise caution and to be aware of the risks when engaging in water-related activities.
